Athletics fans will enjoy the show at the Pan American Games. The Brazilian team will join the best athletes in the Americas since they will bring a numerous delegation, including the recent IAAF World Relays champions for the 4x100m event in Japan.
Last month, Paulo André Oliveira, Derick Silva, Rodrigo Pereira and Jorge Henrique Costa amazed the world by beating USA and Great Britain in a great race defined at the last seconds. Having these stars guarantees a demanding competition on August 9.
Paulo André, responsible for finishing the race in the World Relays, will challenge runners from USA, Jamaica, Canada and Trinidad and Tobago for the 100m test (August 7). This great expectation has already filled up the athletics stadium for all the finals.
The Brazilian Athletics Confederation announced that they will bring stars such as Darlan Romaní (World's fifth in shot put), Thiago Braz (Olympic champion in pole vault), Almir dos Santos (silver medalist in triple jump at the IAAF World Indoor Championships) and Altobelli Santos da Silva (South American champion in 5000m).
As for women, Rosângela Cristina Oliveira Santos (gold medalist in 100m in Guadalajara 2011) will now compete in 4x100m Relay. Nubia Aparecida will challenge the starts in Triple Jump, such as the Colombian Catherine Ibargüen and Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas in one of the most spectacular events.
OLYMPIC-LEVEL TRACK
A red level-1 nine-lane track was installed for the Pan American and Parapan American Games competitions. The quality standards are similar to those used in the London 2012 Olympic Games and will be the ones also used in Paris 2020. Natural grass has been laid in the center to carry out the javelin, discus and hammer throw events.
The athletics track has been certified by the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF), having undergone laboratory and delimiting tests. The venue may host firs-class competitions such as the IAAF World U20 Championship in 2022, an event Peru will bid for.
