Many people expected this surprise. Today Lima 2019 unveiled the mystery behind the artist in charge of surprising the thousands of attendees at the National Stadium of Lima and the millions of viewers from around the world who will be watching the Pan American Games Opening Ceremony.

Panam Sports and Lima 2019 chose the famous singer-songwriter, producer and musician from Puerto Rico, Luis Fonsi, as the main artist of the opening ceremony of the most important multi-sport event of the Americas.

With an incredible artistic career of 20 years, Luis Fonsi is absolutely one of the most prominent Spanish-speaking artists in the world. He has beaten countless records and crossed borders thanks to his successful songs “Despacito,” “Échame la culpa” and “Imposible”, among others.

“As Panam Sports representative, we’re proud because a worldwide star like Luis Fonsi will perform at the Opening Ceremony. When we contacted him, he didn’t hesitate and accepted immediately. He’s very excited to come to Lima and share with the Peruvian people and all athletes of the continent,” said the Panam Sports President, Neven Ilic.

“Peru is known for its historical culture, but the Lima 2019 ceremonies will also show that our country is in the heart of the Pan American youth culture. We’re grateful for Fonsi’s support to help Lima 2019 celebrate sport and its values with thousands of young Peruvian artists, in order to welcome the best athletes in the continent. Together they’ll change not only the way in which the Americas see Peru, but the way that the world sees us,” said the Lima 2019 Executive Director, Carlos Neuhaus.

The award-winning artist, who recently released his new hit “Date la vuelta” with Nicky Jam and Sebastián Yatra, said: “I’m really happy to be part of such a great event as the Pan American Games. I love sports, I admire athletes, and I promise July 26 will be an amazing night.”
