The track installed by the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee in the Athletics Stadium of the National Sports Village for the Games, scheduled to start on July 26, has been certified as Class 1 by The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the regulatory body of athletics worldwide.
The official document was received today in the morning by the Lima 2019 Executive Director, Carlos Neuhaus, and bears the signature of Jorge Salcedo, president of the Technical Commission of the IAAF.
“The IAAF is pleased to certify hereby that the track and field meet all the technical requirements set forth in Article 140 of the IAAF rules for relevant competitions,” states the certificate issued on March 22.
The athletics track has characteristics similar to that used for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the one which will be used for Tokyo 2020. It was installed on March 1 by Mondo, an Italian firm. The process continued between March 9 and 13 with the marking of the lines that delimit the nine lanes.
Along with the main track, the warm-up track has also been certified as Class 1. The certificate is valid for five years and will expire in March 2024.
FIRST COMPETITIONS
According to the calendar of activities planned by Lima 2019, in coordination with the Peruvian Athletics Sports Federation, the stadium will host the South American Athletics Championships, senior category, on May 24 and 25. This will be one of the last opportunities for athletes to qualify for the Pan American Games. Besides, on June 7, 8 and 9 there will be an international Para athletics championship as part of the competitions before the Parapan American Games.
AT VIDENA
The athletics stadium is one of the main venues of the remodeled VIDENA, which will also have a modern aquatic center for swimming, artistic swimming, and diving competitions; a velodrome; a new scenario for bowling with 24 first-level lanes; and a new sports center that will host sports such as artistic roller skating, table tennis and badminton during the Games. Handball and squash will also be played there.
