The first test event for the Pan American Games, organized with the support of Lima 2019, was a complete success. Brazil confirmed its reign.

PERU FINISHES THIRD IN TEAMS FORMAT AT THE JUDO PANAMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Peru closed its best participation in the Judo Panamerican championships with the third place in teams format after defeating Mexico. A historic event that put us on the podium together with Brazil and Cuba. Two days before, Juan Miguel Postigos and Brillith Gamarra won silver and bronze medals respectively.

Yuta Galarreta, Alonso Wong, Daryl Yamamoto, Kiara Arango, Xsara Morales and Gamarra represented Peru in the team event, a qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Games. The Peruvian team excelled for its high technical level during the combats at the Sports Center 1 of the Videna.

Brazil dominance was absolute, taking home 16 medals (five gold, eight silver and three bronze), taking part in 13 of the 15 finals scheduled for four days of the competition. This was Lima 2019 first test event with a particular care for the scheduling details.

Argentina, Bolivia, Panama, Guatemala, Canada, Costa Rica, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Haiti, Chile, Jamaica, Aruba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, USA, Trinidad and Tobago, Honduras, Curacao, Bahamas, Uruguay, El Salvador and Barbados were also part of this continental festival.

GOOD IMPRESSIONS

The President of the Peruvian Judo Federation, Carlos Zegarra, appreciated the support of Lima 2019 to meet with the requirements of the Pan American Confederation. He was also touched by the compliments of the continental authorities regarding the services provided to athletes and the public.

“It’s been a historic championship because we won three medals in the most important judo tournament of the continent. We also proved we have what it takes to organize this kind of events and that we are ready to comply regulations and together with Lima 2019, we showed we are ready for the Games,” expressed Zegarra.

Furthermore, Brazil, Cuba, Canada and Mexico coaches were satisfied with the organization. “It’s a positive balance, there are a few details to tune in, like in every other major event. The organizers’ efforts to do things better was clear and we are sure things little things won't happen at the Pan American Games,” they expressed.

JUDO IN LIMA 2019

Judo will take place from August 8 to the 11 during the Pan American Games at the Sports Center 1 in both gender categories. Following the Judo Panamerican Championships Seniors in Lima, the top qualified athletes secured their place at Lima 2019.

The Lima 2019 Pan American Games is an event gathering 6680 athletes from 41 countries which starts on July 26 at the National Stadium. There will be 17 days of competitions and ceremonies which will take place in 14 districts of Lima and Callao at various venues like VIDENA, Villa María Sports Center, Callao Regional Village, Villa El Salvador Sports Center, Punta Rocas, among others.
