ATHLETES WHO QUALIFIED FOR LIMA 2019 HAD A GREAT PERFORMANCE AT 2019 SOUTH AMERICAN BEACH GAMES

The Peruvian delegation that participated in the South American Beach Games held in Rosario achieved a historic second place in the final ranking. We were only surpassed by the host, Argentina, and were ahead of other sport powers such as Brazil and Chile, which came in third and fourth respectively.

Peru won a total of 19 medals, including 13 gold medals, which were obtained mainly by Peruvians who had already qualified in their corresponding categories for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.

Sailors Stéfano Peschiera, María Belén Bazo, Alonso Collantes and Caterina Romero ranked first after six days of hard competition. Peschiera also qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and stood out in the Standard Laser. Bazo won in the same discipline, while Collantes (junior world champion) and Romero won in Sunfish.

SKIING, SURFING AND SWIMMING

The 2019 South American Beach Games were held between March 14 and 23. Figures, such as María Bramont from Open Water Swimming, skier María Alejandra de Osma and surfer Itzel Delgado, achieved two gold medals each, demonstrating their excellent level just four months before their participation in the Pan American Games.

María Bramont took part in the swimming events in the Paraná River, winning in the distances of 5 and 10 km. María Alejandra de Osma, Lima 2019 ambassador, claimed two gold medals in jump and overall; whilst Itzel Delgado got them in 6 km technical SUP race and long-distance marathon.

GOLDEN CUGLIEVAN

Natalia Cuglievan also stepped onto the first place of the podium. The youngest of the Cuglievan sisters, winner of one of the 8 gold medals that Peru has in the history of the Pan American Games, was the one that opened the golden path of the so-called “Team Peru”, by prevailing in the tricks category, the same one she won four years ago at Toronto 2015.

Finally, Álvaro Torres and Felipe Franco won the last two medals in single sculls and water ski respectively. During this event, Mario Mustafá (water ski - slalom) and Itzel Delgado (200 m SUP) won silver medals; meanwhile María Alejandra de Osma (water ski - tricks), Angelo Caro (skateboard), and Giannisa Vecco (200 m SUP and technical 6 km) obtained the bronze twice.
