Athletics is the base of all sports. It is one of the first sport activities practiced at school. At Francisco Izquierdo Ríos School in Bellavista, primary school students spent some time with Diana Bazalar and Silvana Segura, members of the athletics team that will be competing in the Pan American Games, starting on July 26.
For Diana Bazalar, 110-meter hurdles’ national record, thinks that working with children or teaching them the practice of the sport comes naturally, because she majored in physical education. “It has been a beautiful and different experience, because working with children is special and you have to keep them focused with games like we did .”
However, this was Silvana Segura’s first experience in a school where she could share her experiences with students: “It is a rewarding experience. It remembers me when I started practicing sports at school when my physical education teacher told that I was good at athletics and I’m still competing today.”
“I really like sharing with children, specially because they look up to you and that is very motivating,” said Segura, national triple jump record.
The students could see a race between Silvana, Diana and Milco, the Games mascot. This activity was part of the campaign “Callao es Lima 2019”, promoted by the Regional Government of Callao to spread sports that will be part of the Pan American and Parapan American Games.
“We are spreading that sports are important together with outstanding athletes, since they are a role model. They help us promote Lima 2019, because Callao is preparing in the best way for the Pan American Games”, mentioned Francisco Cairo, the Culture and Sports Management representative of the Regional Government of Callao.
These activities are important to Peruvian athletes because they are creating a legacy. “These actions will have an impact, because children and schools will have a deeper knowledge of all of sports,” stated Bazalar.
Athletics will take place from August 6 to 10 at the new Athletics Stadium in VIDENA.
