WE ARE LOOKING FOR PERUVIANS WHOSE STORIES SHINE TO BE LIMA 2019 TORCHBEARERS

The anticipated Pan American and Parapan American Torch Relay will be the perfect precursor for the multi-sports celebration our country will experience during the Lima 2019 Games. “Nominate Peruvians Whose Stories Shine” is the name of the campaign underway to select the people who will have the honor of carrying the Games torch.

We are calling both public figures and regular citizens to the assume the prestigious role of carrying the Pan American and Parapan American Torch during the relay prior to the Games. Anyone can nominate someone who they feel has an impeccable track record or has had a positive impact on their community.

With that in mind, they can nominate those who are an example of the Olympic and Paralympic movement’s main values, such as friendship, respect, excellence; determination, inspiration, courage and equality.

The nomination for torchbearers is open and can be carried out from anywhere in Peru through the Lima 2019 website until June 7. Applicants must fill out a form detailing who they would like to nominate and why they consider them to be a “Peruvian whose story shines.”

Through a selection process, 900 torchbearer will be chosen for the Pan American Torch Route, and 300 for the Parapan American Torch Relay, making it a total of 1200, whose names will be announced by mid-June.

Among the requirements to be nominated are: being a Peruvian citizen or legal resident; being 16 years old as of June 1, 2019; being able to move 250 meters; being available to participate in the Torch Relay from July 2 to August 23, 2019; and not being a Lima 2019 employee or contractor.

The Pan American Torch will be lit on July 2 at the Plaza del Basamento Escalonado de la Luna in the archaeological site of Teotihuacán, Mexico. From there, it will travel to Peru and arrive to Machu Picchu, in a journey that connects two ancient civilizations from the Americas.

The Pan American Torch will begin its route on July 4 in Machu Picchu, Cusco, and will travel through the Peruvian highlands, jungle and coast for 22 days, in order to inspire and activate millions of people “door to door.” Its journey ends on July 26 at the National Stadium, where the Pan American Games Opening Ceremony will be held.

Events and ceremonies are being organized in Amazonas, Áncash, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Huancavelica, Huancayo, Huánuco, Ica, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Loreto, Moquegua, Pasco, Piura, Puno, San Martín, Tacna and Tumbes as part of the Torch Route. These celebrations will include citizens, who will be part of the festive atmosphere of the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games.

Meanwhile, the Parapan American Torch will be lit on August 20, in a pre-Hispanic-inspired ceremony in the Pachacámac Temple, in south Lima. The relay will go through 12 emblematic huacas, and will finally arrive at the National Stadium for the Parapan American Games Opening Ceremony on August 23.
