THE CLOSING CEREMONY OF THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM GENERAL TRAINING PROCESS GATHERS HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE

Hundreds of applicants to become volunteers as well as the Lima 2019 Executive Secretary Amalia Moreno, the Head of the Lima 2019 Volunteer and Accreditation Office Angela Morales, and the UN Volunteer representative Marcela Artica, attended the closure of the face-to-face training of Lima 2019 Volunteer Program. This program is for more than 20,000 people of Lima and other provinces.

The closing ceremony for the process that started on September 11 and finished on March 17 took place in María Fakhye auditorium at the Technological University of Peru. The musical show was performed by “Duo Idéntico”. There was also a draw and “Milco” the Lima 2019 Games official mascot attended the event.

“Every day we worried about reaching the necessary number of volunteers. And one day we had more than 50,000 registered volunteers. We face a national challenge that should be a commitment for everybody. The volunteer program has been the tool linking us with all Peru. As Milco represents our ancient culture, you represent the strength and energy of our country,” Moreno said.

The last in-person trainings were held this weekend in Lima, Cañete, Paracas and Huacho – Lima 2019 Games venues –with the participation of 4000 registered people.

Morales, Head of the Program, revealed another numbers: 60% of people who participated in the general trainings are volunteers for the first time in their life; 60% of them are women.

“We are proud of the big women’s participation. All of you will be part of a legacy as important as the Games, and you will be prepared to develop other volunteer programs at national level in the future. That is also one of the Lima 2019 objectives,” he said.

Artica thanked the Peruvian State and Lima 2019 for linking with the United Nations system through UNOPS and UN volunteers, to carry out the volunteers' program and the training.

“Thanks to this alliance, it was possible to call committed people who were waiting for this opportunity,” said Artica.

Peru is synonym of volunteers

The group of volunteers that participated in the training process reflects the diversity of the people making the Lima 2019 Games possible.

Madeleine Guillermo Alvarado, aged 50, from Trujillo, attended the closing event. She traveled to Lima in September 2018 for the training. She was accompanied during the process by her daughter, Geraldine Vargas Guillermo, aged 23, who has cerebral palsy.

“She accompanied me everywhere... To be here, in the volunteer program, is a very special experience. The most exciting thing is solidarity and how we can establish different ways of relating to people with impairments. We have the possibility of working as one integrated force.”

Ana Claudia García Valdés, aged 25, was a volunteer in the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games. She assured that the organization of the Lima 2019 general trainings was excellent.

“I feel excited to continue my work as a volunteer. Last year, I was in Buenos Aires to prepare for Lima 2019 Games and see how the ambiance was going to be here. It has been very dynamic with a lot of good vibes.”

Cleidis Velasque Guerra, aged 22, feels very enthusiastic of becoming part of an international community.

“We will be able to exchange cultural experiences and learn more about sports.”

Ethel Centeno, aged 41, highlighted that this process was exciting because she could see many young people and adults together.

“It is an interesting fusion and I will keep the memory of people that want to cooperate and change our city for the good. We are all together in this.”

The Volunteer Route Continues

After completing the general in-person training and the video interview (for foreigners), applicants must continue with the next phases indicated in the Volunteer Route: https://www.lima2019.pe/voluntariado.

Thus, the general virtual training continues (five modules). The purpose is to strengthen the knowledge of volunteer’s applicants to perform their roles at the Lima 2019 Games.

Then, a proposal for a volunteer position will be sent between March and May according to the preference and profile of the applicant, as well as the demand of the area (available on the Volunteer Portal); it finishes with the acceptance of the position becoming as the Lima 2019 Volunteer.

The next phase will be the specific virtual and in-person training in the venue, between April and July.

It should be noted that, the whole process had 100,094 people who showed their interest in participating in the largest multi-sport event in the Americas by pre-registering to be volunteers for the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games.

Benefits of volunteering

Lima 2019 volunteers will have benefits such as the training program offered with the support of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and they will receive a certificate for their training and participation. Likewise, they will receive a uniform, accreditation, meals according to shift, accident insurance, transport, national and international contact network, and the opportunity to live a unique experience.
