PERU WINS TWO NEW GOLD MEDALS AND PLACES THIRD AT PAN AMERICAN PARA ATHLETICS OPEN

Leonardo Díaz and Leinier Savón will go back to Cuba tomorrow after accomplishing their goals. Both Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games medalists not only tested the Class 1 track installed at VIDENA in San Luis but also won three gold medals each at the Parapan American Para Athletics Open that finished tonight in Lima.

They are two of the elite Para athletes competing at the Parapan American Para Athletics Open, which gathered 140 Para athletes from 14 countries over the last three days in the same stage where athletics events of the Parapan American Games will take place.

Díaz Aldana placed at the top  in disc throw, javelin throw and shot put in the T56/57 category. “I want to congratulate the organization because the stadium is great, very accessible for us Para athletes. We want to become familiar with venues and continue our preparation to go for the gold next August,” he said.

Leinier Savón is also going back home with three gold medals after winning in 100 m, 400 m and long jump in the T11/12/13 categories.

TWO GOLD MEDALS FOR PERU

Many fans arrived at the Athletics Stadium to see the competitions and they witnessed the two amazing events in which Peru won. Roy Mamani and Jorge Tinco battled really hard in the 1.500 m, T13 category. After a very tight competition, Mamani reached the first place with 4min27s41c.

In the 1.500 m T46 category, fans cheered for Carlos Sangama and Efraín Sotacuro. It was the most expected event of the third day of competition. In the three first laps, both athletes alternated the first place but 100 m before reaching the finish line, the race became very tight and Sangama beat Sotacuro by just two hundredths, as shown by photo finish. The official time for the winner, reported by Atos, was 4min18s75.

CASTILLO'S TRIPLE VICTORY

People also applauded the young Jesus Castillo (15 years old) as he reached the podium three times. He became the most awarded Peruvian Para athlete after taking home three silver medals for 100 m, 200 m and long jump in the T64 category. He was one of the youngest athletes in this Open.

In the next few days, the National Paralympic Association of Peru (ANPP) will publish the final list of Para athletes competing in Lima 2019.

In the final qualification, Cuba finished its participation with eight gold medals, followed by Costa Rica (five medals), Peru and El Salvador (four each), Venezuela and Chile (two), and Panama (one).

The Parapan American Games will take place between August 23 and September 1, 2019. Lima expects to receive 1890 Para athletes from 33 countries participating in 17 sport disciplines.
