After spending the night guarded by the Misti and the Pichu Pichu, and waking up high above the Colca Canyon, the Flame will continue traveling across Peru to start the Lima 2019 Games. Now it is the turn of Nazca, where 12 torchbearers will light up the celebration all the way to the city’s viewpoint.
The Nazca Pan American celebration will start at 9:49, with the first torch starting its journey from the Cantilloc aqueducts. It will cover a total distance of 2.5 km, ending at the viewpoint of the Nazca Lines at 10:50, to start the celebration.
That same day, Tuesday July 9, the Pan American Flame will arrive in the city of Ica. One of the most exciting moments will undoubtedly be when the 62th torchbearer runs the last 200 meters of Jose Picasso Peratta stadium to light the cauldron.
Hugo ‘El Cholo’ Sotil will be in charge of this important moment. The decision to pick him was not hard, since the Ica native played two football World Cups, was a star at Barcelona in Spain, and even won a Copa America in 1975.
The event in Ica begins at 15:00 at the Avenida Los Maestros roundabout. Among the most outstanding athletes carrying the Pan American torch is Gustavo Makabe, ranked second at the 1998 South American Swimming Championship, as well as Arturo Yarasca, who has an orthopedic hand and participates in high-level competitions in triathlon, which is one of the hardest sports disciplines as it combines swimming, athletics and cycling.
About 80% of the 62 torchbearers will be outstanding Athletes from the region; the others will be citizens have provided valuable work for their city. That is the case of César Chavez, volunteer at the Ica Hospital and of the leading figures of the city's reconstruction after the 2007 earthquake.
One of the most awaited places in the tour of the Pan American flame is the courtyard of the newly built Church of Luren. A landmark that is waiting to see the Flame at 16:15.
ABOUT LIMA 2019
The opening ceremony of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games will be held at the National Stadium in July 26, 2019. This continental event will gather 6680 athletes from 41 countries and delegations from the Americas.
There will be 17 days of competitions and ceremonies between July 26 and August 11, which will take place in 14 districts of Lima and Callao at various venues like VIDENA, Villa María Sports Center, Callao Regional Village, Villa El Salvador Sports Center, Punta Rocas, among others.
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games will include 39 sports and 61 disciplines, in which athletes will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals. A total of 22 disciplines are qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
