The Imperial City of Cusco is already celebrating the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games, to be held in Lima for the first time ever. The historic Archaeological Capital of America was chosen as the starting place for the celebrations of the Pan American Torch arrival.
The Pan American Flame will arrive in this city tomorrow, July 3, to light the Torch. The flame is traveling from Mexico, where the New Fire Ceremony was held. Then, the flame will go to the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary, where the Pan American Torch will be lit this Thursday, starting then its journey through 26 Peruvian cities.
People from Cusco are thus excited about this celebration, which will kick off the Pan American Games in Peru. The Cusco Main Square has been decorated with various torch symbols, much to the enthusiasm of the locals and the hundreds of foreign visitors currently there.
Milco, the Lima 2019 official mascot, has become a sensation in Cusco. He came to witness the historic moment of the torch lighting and relay. The mascot spent time with the students from Colegio Nacional de Ciencias, the most important school in Cusco. The students had an enjoyable time with Milco, who promotes the Olympic and Paralympic values in Peru.
Meanwhile, the Pan American Torch relay will start on Thursday 4 at noon, starting from one of the main tourist attractions of the city, the Templo de Sacsayhuamán. It will then tour the main streets of Cusco, to end with a ceremony at the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega Stadium, where a symbolic cauldron lighting ceremony will be held, before the torch journey continues toward Juliaca and Puno.
The Pan American Torch will travel through 26 cities in the Andes, the Jungle and the Coast of Peru for 23 days, visiting landmarks such as the Rainbow Mountain in Cuzco, the Colca Valley in Arequipa, the Nazca Lines in Ica, Titicaca Lake in Puno, the Ruins of Chan Chan in La Libertad, among others. The journey will end on July 26 at the National Stadium, where the Opening Ceremony for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games will take place.
