The recent 10,000 meter champion, national Athletics star and local idol, Jhon Cusi Huamán, will be the first athlete to bear the Pan America Torch. He will receive it at the mythical ruins of Sacsayhuamán to start the relay will take the Pan American Flame —lit up last Tuesday in Teotihuacán— across the entire country until it reaches the national Stadium on July 26.
Cusi (34), born in Huarocondo, Anta province in Cuzco, was nominated by people from Cuzco. The runner came in fourth place at the Senior South American Tournament held at the VIDENA stadium, remodeled for the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games.
Three years ago, Cusi was the guide for another Para runner from Cusco, Luis Miguel Sandoval, athlete with a visual impairment, who will also be a torchbearer.
OTHER CUSCO IDOLS
The torchbearers list includes two sport stars from Cusco. Ramón ‘El Cóndor’ Zavaleta, an outstanding national figure in cycling, stage winner at the Classic Cycle Race, very popular in the 80's and 90's. He represented the Peruvian colors at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games.
Ramón ‘El Ratón’ Rodríguez del Solar, born in Pilcopata will be bearing the torch.He was a member of the Cienciano team that reached the glory at the Copa Sudamericana in 2003.
Among the most recent ones, names like Rina Cjuro and Yuri Labra, stand out. Both athletes specialized in 3000 meters hurdles and both South American champions at the Continental Games held last year in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Rina and Yuri will be competing between August 6 and 10 in Athletics at the Pan American Games.
OTHER PROMINENT FIGURES
The first day will have other known figures, some from television like Eddie Fleishman or even the President of the Peruvian institute of Sports Sebastian Suito.
The Torch will travel through a total of 26 cities during 23 days. After leaving Cusco, it will go to Juliaca, Puno, Moquegua, Arequipa, Ica, among other cities.
