The best national cyclists participated in the National Road Cycling Championship, for men’s and women’s Elite category, held in the Costa Verde between San Miguel and Miraflores. The circuit will be used in the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games.
The competition had the participation of about a hundred enthusiastic cyclists that arrived early at the Costa Verde, which was closed for the event. Women had to complete four laps to reach the finish line. Cinthia Dávila from Iquitos was the first athlete to cross the finish line, followed by Samantha Molina and Ángela Ramírez.
Men had to complete eight laps. The winner was Alonso Gamero, who had more than seven minutes of advantage from his rivals. Roiner Navarro won the second place and Alain Quispe won the third place.
Several areas of the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee participated in the competition to test the route that will be used for the Lima 2019 Games. This zone will be the venue for this competition. Road cycling and Para-cycling road will take place in the Costa Verde for the Parapan American Games. The Lima 2019 Ambassador Israel Hilario is one of the main candidates to win medals in this event.
Peruvian athletes had already started training and because of the great competition level shown, they are in good track to fight for medals. This tournament was also part of the preparations for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.
The International Commissaire Rainer Nuhlen attended the 2018 National Road Cycling Championship, and also taught some refresher courses for commissaires and local judges.
ABOUT THE PAN AMERICAN AND PARAPAN AMERICAN GAMES
Lima 2019 Pan American Games will welcome 41 National Olympic Committees that are part of Panam Sports (formerly known as Pan American Sports Organization — PASO) and will gather 6680 athletes who will participate in 39 sports and 62 disciplines, between July 26 and August 11. Likewise, the Parapan American Games will gather 1890 athletes who will participate in 17 sports and 18 disciplines, between August 23 and September 1.
Lima 2019 will be a qualifying event for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which guarantees the presence of the top athletes in these sport disciplines.
Athletes from the Americas will participate in the Pan American Games which are the biggest international multidisciplinary sport event.
The competition is held between athletes from the Americas, every four years, a year before the Olympic Games.
Since 2007, the city chosen as venue of the Pan American Games also organizes the Parapan American Games where athletes with any kind of impairments participate in. The Parapan American Games are held immediately after the Pan American Games.
