The district of San Miguel, one of the Lima 2019 venues, is getting ready for the most important sports event in the continent through the sports festival VI Football “Nuestro fútbol, nuestra pasión” (Our football, our passion), which took place at the Julio Meléndez Sports Center.
Children and parents showed their excitement for this sports event and for Milco, the Pan American and Parapan American Games mascot.
“We’re happy and proud of hosting the Pan American and Parapan American Games, which is why we promote sports through different disciplines in childhood. They’re the foundation of everything,” said Juan José Guevara, mayor of San Miguel.
Beach volleyball, skateboarding, speed skating, BMX, extreme BMX, and part of the road cycling competition will take place in Costa Verde in the district of San Miguel during the Pan American Games, while Para cycling road competitions will take place there during the Parapan American Games.
“We’re improving public safety and developing evacuation plans and a tourist circuit. We want to be a district that has things we can showcase to the neighbors and tourists that visit the country; we want our district to be an example,” he explained.
With respect to the legacy, Guevara pointed out that “we will work hand in hand with the federations so that the Games’ legacy endures. For example, we will continue to promote skateboarding, an Olympic sport.”
Nadia Valencia, mother of one of the young participants, welcomed the presence of Lima 2019 in the district to “encourage sports and promote the Games.” Then, she took the opportunity to take a picture of her son with Milco.
At age nine, Bruno already starts to experience passion for sports through his team Atlético Lima Callao and even assures that “sports lead you to a good life; swimming, for example, can help you grow.”
Thus, children had the chance to share a moment with Milco who continues to spread and promote Lima 2019 through his presence in various sports activities. By doing so, he seeks to encourage unity and the values that represent the Games, like uniting all of the Americas through sports.
