The event was carried out with the aim of measuring the progress of the Para athletes that have been training at each of their clubs and institutions at a national level for the Lima 2019 Games.
A total of 58 swimmers with physical, visual and intellectual impairments participated in the women’s and men’s 400 m freestyle, 50 m breaststroke, 50 m butterfly, 100 m breaststroke events, and the men’s 100 m backstroke event.
Dunia Felices competed today in the 50 m butterfly event as part of her training for the Games. This follows her great performance at the World Para Swimming Loteria Caixas in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
“I did very well because I swam in five events—50 m freestyle, 50 m butterfly, 50 m backstroke, and 100 and 200 m freestyle—, and I reduced my times and won the silver medal in 50 m backstroke, and a bronze medal in 200 m freestyle. I’m so happy to be able to share this, and it’s a good sign for Lima 2019, because I’m confirming my times for the events I want to participate in,” stated Dunia.
She is thrilled that Lima 2019 is so close. “Seeing the infrastructure, for example the Velodrome, already finished fills me with emotion, I even shed some tears. Seeing the athletes training and playing in a high quality venue makes me happy, because I feel that the public is starting to become invested in the Games,” she explained.
Juan León and Rodrigo Santillán are two Para athletes who are also waiting for confirmation to be present at Lima 2019.
“I’m happy to have participated in four events, and now I’m just waiting for confirmation to participate in the Parapan American Games. It would be an honor to be able to represent my country, and an honor to do so at home, because these Games will be historic,” asserted León.
On his part, Rodrigo Santillán, considered one of the revelations of Para swimming, stated that “it would be an incredible experience, and all I have to do is keep training and leave it all in the pool.”
Para swimming competitions will take place from August 25 to 31, at the Aquatic Center in the National Sports Village (Videna).
