After two intense days of competitions at the VIDENA’s Sports Center 3, the International Perú 2019 tournament enters its final stage. As of tomorrow, the top four players in the singles, doubles and mixed doubles events will compete to make it to the top of the podium at the Lima 2019 test event. Two Peruvian pairs will participate in the qualifying matches.
Daniela Macías and Danica Nishimura made it to the semifinals after defeating the Colombian pair Juliana Giraldo and Laura Londoño (21-5 and 21-7) in women’s doubles. The athletes will compete tomorrow against the Brazilian pair Jaqueline and Samia Lima, who defeated them in the quarterfinals of the Pan American Championship a couple of months ago.
After playing together for 10 years, the Peruvian pair has been gaining experience to try and win a medal at Lima 2019. “We know how to complement each other and even communicate using signs. We’ve been improving many aspects since we returned from the training camp in Denmark and Asia. Now, we hope to win the rematch against the Brazilian team,” stated the 2018 ODESUR Games’ champions.
Furthermore, Bruno Barrueto y Diego Subauste also made it to the men’s double semifinals after defeating Chilean pair Cristián Arraya and Iván León (21-19 and 23-21) in a tough competition. Tomorrow they will compete against Guatemalan athletes Aníbal Marroquín and Rubén Castellanos for a place in the final.
“We had some issues during the second set because our rackets broke, but we managed to win the match. The tournament is demanding and the courts are great for competing. It’s exciting for a badminton player to compete in these types of professional facilities,” said the pair, who are in the reserve list for the Pan American Games.
Meanwhile, the acclaimed Peruvian player, Mario Cuba, decided to leave the competition due to pain in his hand that prevented him from continuing to play during his mixed doubles match alongside Daniela Macías. Therefore, he was also unable to play his men’s doubles match with Diego Mini.
