The coach of the men’s team that will represent us at the Pan American Games will be Nolberto Solano, who did not hesitate when given the task. With the same personality he had when he stood in front of a ball, Ricardo Gareca’s technical assistant feels this is his time and trusts his team to achieve good results at Lima 2019.
Solano’s career of 95 matches with the Peruvian team and participating in world-renowned events, such as the World Cup preliminary rounds and the Copa América, give him a huge experience, despite of this being his debut as coach. Although this is not a FIFA event, the excitement of the fans will be higher and the Peruvian technical director hopes to benefit from the home advantage and qualify to semifinals against Uruguay, Jamaica and Honduras.
“It is an honor to lead the Peruvian team and doing so in such an important event as the Pan American Games, that we will host and where we aim for the gold, is a huge responsibility. The cheers of the fans will be essential for all the athletes representing our country,” said the “Maestrito”.
Solano’s plan is to begin with training microcycles by the end of the month, with a preliminary list he has already designed that relies on the clubs’ availability to hand over their players. The former Peruvian team’s captain aims to win the gold at the Stadium of the University of San Marcos, that was vital on his childhood as a football player.
“The San Marcos Stadium is a part of my life because I lived in front of it throughout my childhood. In that old field I improved my technique, which later led me to professional football. I used to climb the wall to play with my friends when I was seven years old. It is a privilege to see it now because it has all the facilities needed,” he recalled.
WOMEN’S HOPE
In turn, the women’s team coach, Doriva Bueno, mentioned they are ready to accomplish their first goal, pass the first round. After the friendly matches against Colombia, the team must strengthen their virtues and avoid the mistakes that led them to lose.
“The team has made a great progress in each preparation cycle. We debuted against Argentina, a rival that will gain experience with its experience at the Women’s World Cup in France. Although we lost two friendly matches against Colombia, we played well and in similar physical conditions,” stated Doriva Bueno.
COMPETITION SYSTEM
The football competitions at Lima 2019 start on July 28, from 10:00 hours, with a match between Mexico and Jamaica, Paraguay vs. Colombia come next, followed by Panama vs. Costa Rica and, at the end, Peru against Argentina. Whereas, the men’s competitions start on July 29, with the following matches: Panama vs. Mexico, Ecuador vs. Argentina, Jamaica vs. Honduras and Peru vs. Uruguay.
The matches at the Pan American Games will be regulated by the FIFA rules. At the first stage, the teams will earn three points per victory and one per tie. The two first teams of each group qualify to semifinals and from there, in case of a tie, the teams will play an extra 30 minutes to determine the winner. If scores are still tied, a penalty shootout will be played.
MODERN VENUE
The Stadium of the National University of San Marcos was listed as a top-level stadium by the South American U-17 Championship participants. The athletes and coaches of Argentina, Ecuador, Paraguay, Chile, Peru, Brazil and Uruguay were impressed by the facilities provided by the venue during the competition.
Peru delivered an incredible venue, where FIFA can organize any kind of important event. At first it was difficult to adjust to the synthetic turf, because it was new, but we had to get used to it, mentioned Pablo Aimar and Gustavo Morínigo, technical directors of Argentina and Paraguay, respectively.
