July 26 will be a historical day for Peru because it will mark the start of the largest multi-sport celebration it has ever held. Lima will house the Pan American and Parapan American Games, and the top athletes in the Americas will be awarded beautiful medals with Peruvian motifs.
The winners of the three first places in each competition will receive medals engraved with Peruvian figures that are part of the country’s rich history.
The gold medals feature the Twelve Angle Stone of Cusco, the silver ones have the Kuelap Fortress of Chachapoyas as main figure, and the bronze ones are decorated with the Paracas Candelabra. These images will showcase Peru’s natural and historical wealth, as more than 400 million people will follow the competitions worldwide.
Meanwhile, an image of the Pachacamac Sanctuary has been carved on the backside of the Parapan American Games medals.
The figure of the Quipu, a Pre-Hispanic knot-record method used by Incas to keep records and spread information, stands out in both the Pan American and Parapan American medals. Gold medals have one knot; silver medals, two; and bronze medals, three.
Each medal has a diameter of 80 mm, is 6 mm thick, and weights 320 grams. Also, the disc bases are made of copper and are covered with a layer of 24k gold for gold medals, a 950-silver layer for silver medals, and copper for bronze medals.
Lima 2019 and the National Society of Mining, Energy and Petroleum will deliver a total of 4941 medals for the Pan American and Parapan American Games: 1582 gold, 1582 silver, and 1777 bronze. As a matter of fact, 965 gold, 965 silver and 1098 bronze medals will be awarded only during the Lima 2019 Pan American Games. That is 3028 medals will be delivered in this event starting on July 26.
As for the Parapan American Games that are scheduled to start on August 23, a total of 1913 (617 gold, 617 silver, and 679 bronze) will be awarded during this international competition until September 1.

Hugo del Castillo, silver medalist at the Santa Marta 2017 Bolivarian Games, is Peru’s main poomsae star. Two of his team members are Renzo Saux and José María Montejo. Besides, the first medal ceremony in the women’s category will be on the same day, and Marcela Castillo, two-time gold medalist at the Trujillo 2013 and Santa Marta 2017 Bolivarian Games, is a strong contender in this discipline.
