Gymnastics is a sport that tends to attract attention because it is so spectacular. Even more so if those doing it are members of the national gymnastics team who will be participating in the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.
Luis Pizarro and Daniel Agüero took some time away from preparing for the Games and visited the Institución Educativa 6070 Héroes del Alto Cenepa school, located in Villa El Salvador, as part of the “Soy Lima 2019” campaign.
“It’s always an honor to be able to promote the sport, interact with children and teach them that sports make society better in general. It’s a nice feeling,” commented Daniel Agüero, who will represent Peru in artistic gymnastics.
Before the exhibition, the students were able to watch the sociocultural show promoting Olympic and Paralympic values in their education.
Luis Pizarro had been to schools before to give sports demonstrations; however, he had never had the chance to be with so many students that wanted to see him in action. “I think it’s great that we can bring our sport to schools and that children can see what we’ve achieved. We hope this will motivate them to do gymnastics and do it better than us,” he said.
The athletes had the chance to give demonstrations for the students and were surprised with their response.
“You can tell when a child has talent, because without having practiced they can do things that seem very difficult, and that’s why it’s important for Physical Education to improve in the country,” noted Agüero.
Albiere Ordoñez is a tenth-grade school student who did a performed on stilts and also decided to try doing gymnastics with the champions. “It was amazing. It’s the first time I’ve tried it and I think I did well. It’s incredible to be up in the air, which is why I’ll be there cheering for the Peruvian team when they’re participating in Lima 2019,” he said.
Finally, Pizarro pointed out that “the idea is for the sport to become better known and to no longer be centralized so that we can have more gymnasts all over Peru.”
The gymnastics competition will take place at the new Villa El Salvador Sports Center. It will start with the artistic gymnastics competition, from July 27 to 31, followed by rhythmic gymnastics from August 2 to 5 and Trampoline on August 4 and 5.
