César Chávez, volunteer in the fight against child cancer, was chosen to be one of the Pan American Torch bearers. He took advantage of the moment to propose marriage to his children's mother after being together for 12 years.
There was a big surprise hidden among the 62 bearers of the Pan American Flame. César Chávez, beloved citizen of Ica on account of his social work, asked the mother of his three children, Lily Flores, to go with him to the Main Square of Ica for a picture with the Lima 2019 Pan American Games Torch.
It was all part of a big surprise. Long ago, César had promised Lily that the day he proposed marriage to her would be in the most special way possible. “I love her, she's the mother of my three children, and I told myself I wouldn't wait any longer. I thought about popping the question at Christmas, but then the Pan American Games came up and I knew this was the big chance,” said an excited César Chávez, who is well-known in Ica for his contribution to the reconstruction of the city after the 2007 earthquake.
Lily, computer science teacher, was next to her three children when she heard the question she had been waiting to hear for so long. She will never forget that on Tuesday, July 9 at 17:00 she felt the love in the Pan American times.
Flame tours Peru for the Sixth Day
Joined by hundreds of people on its historic first tour in Peru, the Pan American Torch arrived in the city of Ica. It became the seventh city in the journey of the flame that lights us all, on its way to Lima.
There were 62 torchbearers in a route of nearly 10 kilometers. On its tour, it visited the recently restored church of Señor de Luren and the Main Square. Actor and TV host Christian Rivero also participated in this event and relayed the flame to another well-known Peruvian, 1975 Copa América champion, Hugo “El Cholo” Sotil, historical Peruvian forward who played in the Spanish club Barcelona alongside all-time great Johann Cruyff.
Sotil, aged 70, was bearer number 62. He was designated to close the Pan American Torch relay event in an emotional ceremony in which he was declared in an illustrious son of the city of Ica.
