The Pan American and Parapan American Games are starting to raise interest in new sports. Children get to know other sport disciplines and interact with new idols.
The exhibition was held at the Institución Educativa Villa Limatambo 7106 school in Villa María del Triunfo. Children gave a warm welcome to the members of the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee and the Peruvian water polo players Gonzalo Rodríguez and Miranda Nieto, who performed a water polo exhibition as part of this campaign. “Soy Lima 2019” aims to promote the Olympic and Paralympic values.
“It was a nice experience. I love how children were excited to listen to us and their desire to learn and ask for an autograph. Most of them didn’t even know about water polo, and they used to think it was similar to handball. They thought it was fun and asked me if it is possible to jump in the water and about the use of caps,” said Miranda.
“These experiences are rewarding because we want to promote our sport, which is not very popular, but once you explain it to kids, you can feel their enthusiasm to learn and they have fun,” added Gonzalo Rodríguez, who lives in the US since last year and practices water polo to improve his performance.
Students prepared banderoles with the Lima 2019 logo and spent 10 minutes doing exercise, as stated in the Ministry of Education regulations. “There was a lot of expectation, and we prepared a warm welcome because this kind of activities allows our students to learn more about new sport disciplines,” said Vicente Pari, school principal.
The expectation was so high that Miranda hopes to repeat this kind of exhibitions with children. “Children could visit us during our training sessions on Saturdays. They could get to know the whole national team and cheer on us during the Games,” said Miranda.
Water polo competitions will be held from August 4 to 10 at the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center. In women’s, Peru, Cuba, Canada and Mexico are part of group B. Meanwhile, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Peru are part of group B in men’s.
