With 18 days left until the long-awaited Pan American Games Opening Ceremony, Lima is getting ready to witness this grand event at the National Stadium. On July 26, the best of Peru’s talent will be showcased.
Lima 2019 is pleased to announce the presence of the renowned Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez, who will be one of the main figures of the Games Opening Ceremony. He is considered Peru’s greatest classical musical representative at international level and one of the best in the world.
“Dear compatriots and brothers of the Americas, my name is Juan Diego Flórez, a Peruvian opera singer. I’m happy to announce that I’ll have the honor of performing at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games Opening Ceremony. I’m very excited and happy to be able to meet you again in this extraordinary sporting event that will bring the countries of the Americas together. See you next July 26. Let's all play at Lima 2019,” said one of the world's best tenors as he confirmed his participation in the Pan American Games Opening Ceremony.
Juan Diego Flórez was born in Lima on January 13, 1973. His father, Rubén Flórez, was a Peruvian music singer who mostly sang Criollo waltzes composed by the famous Chabuca Granda. Juan Diego Flórez not only inherited his father’s vocal talent, but also his love for the Peruvian and Latin American music. His mother, María Teresa, who also loved Peruvian music, was a driving force in Juan Diego’s life, motivating him to pursue a music career and meet his goals.
Eager to explore the world and pursue a degree, Juan Diego obtained a scholarship to study at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He studied there from 1993 to 1996, where he had the opportunity to perform a number of complete fully-staged operas with an orchestra, a foundation that would later serve him at the dawn of his spectacular career.
Juan Diego keeps a close relationship with his homeland, which honored him with the highest distinction awarded by the Peruvian government: the Order of the Sun of Peru, in the class of Grand Cross. In 2007, Juan Diego Flórez received the highest distinction awarded by Peru: the Grand Cross of the Order of the Sun.
In 2014, Juan Diego Flórez received the World Economic Forum's Crystal Award, which recognizes artists who excel in their field and contribute to the improvement of the world.
The Opening Ceremony, in charge of a Peruvian creative team in partnership with Balich Worldwide Shows, will feature national and international stars such as Luis Fonsi.
