Carlos Neuhaus, Lima 2019 executive director said that the organization for the Pan American and Parapan American Games is on the right track. “We’re in the homestretch” he added.
During the delivery of the Videna Aquatic Center, Neuhaus was satisfied with this new sports venue. He said that the challenges ahead go beyond infrastructure works and he encouraged Peruvians to trust the Games.
“I’m really proud and satisfied to get to this stage but the Games are just about to start. That’s why we have held many test events and we’re making good progress. Let’s trust Peruvians and all our international friends. The Pan American Games are not only based on construction works but they are also a whole organization.”
Afterwards, he stressed the importance of the milestones achieved and he assured that most of them exceeded all expectations.
“The organization around the Games in our country regarding security, transportation and everything necessary to welcome all visitors with open arms, is huge. It also involves volunteers: we aimed to reach 40,000 volunteers and we ended up receiving 100,000 applications. Likewise, we were also very fearful about the first day of ticket sales but in a week, we sold nearly 80,000 tickets,” he said.
It is worth mentioning that 57 years after the opening of the last Olympic swimming pool in Peru (in 1962 in Campo de Marte), the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee delivered the brand new VIDENA Aquatic Center to the Peruvian Swimming Federation and the National Paralympic Association of Peru.
This venue was entirely built by the Games Organizing Committee and it is currently one of the Americas’ most modern facilities where the most important international competitions will take place in the future.
MODERN STAGE
The Aquatic Center has one warm-up pool measuring 50 m long, 25 m wide and 2 m deep, and an Olympic competition swimming pool measuring 50 m long, 25 m wide and 3 m deep. Additionally, there is one diving pool measuring 21 m long, 25 m wide and 5.5 m deep.
The aquatic precinct is one of the three venues built by Lima 2019 at VIDENA. It has changing rooms and showers, a common area for competitors, a judges’ zone, a first-aid station for athletes and spectators, a mixed zone for accredited press and an anti-doping control area. The venue is certified by the International Swimming Federation (FINA).
