With 44 days to go until the largest multi-sports event in the Americas to ever take place in Peru, SERPOST released a postage stamp inspired by the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games, which will remain as a lasting memory of the international event that will put Peru under the spotlight.
The Lima 2019 Games postage stamps will be used for national and international correspondence or collected by philatelists.
The stamps were put into circulation and presented to the public in the presence of Virginia Nakagawa Morales, Deputy Minister of Communications; Carlos Neuhaus Tudela, Lima 2019 President; Enrique Prado Lopez de Romaña, SERPOST Directive Board President; Enrique Prado and Carlos Roldán del Águila Chavez, General Director of Museums in the Ministry of Culture.
The Deputy Minister of Communications highlighted the Lima 2019 Games and the boost that they will give the country. "In less than a month, our country will welcome the best athletes, and this will be a wonderful experience for our country. The infrastructure has been completed in record time and everything is up and running. This is our opportunity to put Lima and our country in the spotlight. We must live up to our reputation as the 'Capital of brotherly friendship'. We must show everyone that we are a friendly and welcoming country. Let's all enjoy the Games together and win an award for best country, like when we won FIFA's Best Fan Award in Russia 2018," she said.
Meanwhile, Carlos Neuhaus thanked SERPOST for honoring the Games with the postage stamps. "My visit to the Lima Central Post Office was very pleasant. It brought me back to my childhood days when I used to go to the post office. The postage stamp presented today is a philatelic symbol that will immortalize the memory of these Games, which must be the best. That's what we're working for. Nearly everything is ready to welcome around 15 thousand athletes, technical officials, judges and leaders; as well as close to 175 thousand tourists who will watch the Games."
The president of SERPOST gave some additional information regarding the launch of the postage stamp. "Stamps are part of our cultural heritage. We couldn't miss out on the opportunity to be part of an event as important as the Pan American and Parapan American Games, which deserves all our support. Lima 2019 will proudly represent Peru and deserved this recognition," said Enrique Prado Lopez de Romaña.
THE POSTAGE STAMPS
A total of 10,000 postage stamps inspired by the Lima 2019 Games were issued, each with a face value of 6.5 soles. They are se-tenants, that is, two stamps that make up one graphic composition. The design highlights the new Athletics Stadium at the National Sports Village and Milco, the Lima 2019 Games official mascot.
In addition, SERPOST, in coordination with Lima 2019, will have a service desk in the Pan American and Parapan American Village located in the district of Villa El Salvador, where the athletes will access the postal service for local, national and international mail.
With these two actions, SERPOST will join the institutions that support the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games as friends of the Pan American Games.
CULTURAL VALUE
Postage stamps reflect a country's cultural values since they can be used to discover tourist destinations, celebrities, traditions, sport events, flora and fauna. Stamps represent part of national or regional history and can be used to disseminate a nation's cultural heritage.
They can also become a great educational tool for new generations who can learn about culture, history, flora, fauna and other topics by collecting postage stamps.
SERPOST, as Postal Operator of the Peruvian Government, is the only entity authorized to issue postage stamps and therefore presents the Annual Stamps Calendar before the Ministry of Transport and Communications (General Directorate for International Affairs and Regulation of Communications) every year, which is eventually approved by this entity.
In 2018, the Stamps Calendar incorporated Sports as a theme, including two postage stamps inspired by the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games. Their design was coordinated with the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee.
