Now that we are less than six months away from the main sports event of the continent, the Lima 2019 Pan American Games are getting ready to receive the best athletes of the Americas for two weeks of exciting competitions in the Peruvian capital.
Here are the 5 main things you should know about Lima 2019 to start the new year.
Chefs de Mission Seminar – January 21
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games Organizing Committee (COPAL) will welcome the delegates of the 41 countries of Panam Sports for the Chefs de Mission Seminar to be held by the end of January.
More than 70 representatives of the Americas’ NOCs will gather from January 21 to 24 at the Swissotel in Lima to make sure their countries and athletes are prepared for the Pan American Games starting on July 26.
The four-day seminar will include lengthy discussions on the Games-related policies and procedures, including arrivals and departures, transportation, hospitality, ticketing, ceremonies and many other critical logistics issues.
The Seminar will also include venue visits to the almost finished Pan American and Parapan American Village; the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center, that will house many sports, including hockey, baseball and water polo; the National Sports Village (VIDENA) with athletics, cycling and multi-sport fields; as well as a coast tour where road cycling and volleyball competitions will take place. A visit to the National Stadium will be also available for all attendees.
Many of the delegates will be Chefs de Mission leading the delegations of their countries during the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, while some of the Chefs de Mission will not be appointed until the Games get closer. Other NOC representatives and Games experts will attend the seminar in their place.
Extended Volunteer Application Deadline
Those interested in becoming Lima 2019 volunteers have more time now to complete their applications.
As the interest and demand to become a volunteer are increasing every day, the application deadline has been extended to February 22.
Since the opening of the application process on September 11, 2018, almost 70,000 people have started the entry process and 40,000 of them have completed their applications.
Meanwhile, more than 7000 people have been trained in Lima and its surroundings thanks to the Lima 2019 Volunteer Program and the support of the United Nations. The objective is to train 30,000 people by the end of February.
Lima 2019 Venues Getting Ready
Outstanding progress has been made in all Lima 2019 venues and clusters. As the new year begins, the Pan American Village has seven finished towers and expansions of the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center and VIDENA continue without any issues.
Almost 40% of Athletes Qualified for Lima 2019
With less than 200 days to start the Pan American Games, 35% of athletes that will compete in Lima 2019 have already qualified for the Games. But there is still a lot to do.
Six months and countless qualifying events are pending for 2019, while athletes make their final efforts to represent their countries in the most important sports event of the continent in July.
Fencing, cycling, baseball and basketball athletes have already qualified or helped their countries qualifying for the Games, while sports like golf, badminton, tennis and BMX have qualified for end-of-the-season rankings.
The amount of athletes competing in Lima 2019 for each country and sport will be informed by the end of April. The final rosters will be decided in the next two months before the Entry By Name deadline on June 26, exactly one month before the Opening Ceremony of the Games.
