Lima 2019 is currently hosting the best junior fencers at the South American Pre-Cadet, Cadet and Junior Championships. This event will be a test event for the fencing facilities located at the Lima Convention Center. So far, three Peruvian fencers have reached the podium. Brazil, Colombia, and Argentina are the leaders of the general medal ranking, showing a very high competition level.
Among the outstanding athletes are the Brazilians Gabriella Vianna and Lorenzo Mion (both 15 years old), Pre-Cadet gold winners of and bronze medalists in Cadets. Both of them praised the level of the tournament and the quality of the Lima 2019 fencing venue. “This sport requires a lot of concentration and the filed of play is in excellent conditions. It’s a good experience for athletes my age to participate in this type of stages,” Mion said.
Brazilian fencing works very hard with its grassroots, that are even monitored by Russian coaches. Many talents who will soon be present at the Pan American and Olympic Games are competing these days in Lima. “It's been a tough competition as girls from other countries have a really aggressive game. In the final bout, I had to use all my experience (on the Peruvian Soriano) using my age to my advantage,” said Vianna.
Another outstanding fencing athlete is the Venezuelan Moisés Molina who won the gold in the sabre event of the Pre-Cadet category. At 13, he hopes to follow the career path of his Peruvian Ruben Limardo, Pan American champion at Toronto 2015. “I would like to make my own history, just like he did. I pay close attention to how he calculates the times in a bout and understands his opponent’s psychology,” said the champion from Caracas.
TIGHT COMPETITION DAY
Brazil and Argentina won two gold medals each in the Cadet competition day. While the Chilean Katina Proestakis and the Colombian Maria Nusa broke the hegemony of the Brazilians by beating them in foil and épée finals, respectively.
This Thursday fencers will compete in women’s and men’s Junior sabre, foil and épée events of the (between 13 and 20 years old). The competition starts at 09:00 and ends around 20:30 in the Fencing Pavilion at the Lima Convention Center. Admission will be free of charge until June Saturday 8 through the gate located on Av. Arqueología 206.
