The recognition was conferred during the discussion group: Women and Impairment “Inclusion without discrimination”, organized by the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion, through the CONTIGO Program, as part of the activities for the “International Women's Day”. The event was held at the Plaza de Armas of Villa María del Triunfo, one of the venues of the Pan American and Parapan American Games.
The Para athlete gave an emotional speech about her life story and received an award for being a genuine example for our society. “I didn’t expect this recognition. It’s the first I receive, and it makes me very happy,” said Dunia, who hopes to exert a positive influence on children.
“I have seen many women with children of all ages. I hope that my experience, as an athlete motivates them to practice sports,” stated the Lima 2019 Ambassador.
Dunia was accompanied by Sabina Mata, member of the Fraternity for People with Illnesses or Impairments (FRATER PERU); Dorcas Guillermo, member of the Center for the Empowerment of People with an Impairment; and Oscar Hurtado, executive director of the CONTIGO Program.
“Sabina and Dorcas’ stories have encouraged me to continue inspiring more women,” said Dunia.
Villa María del Triunfo, one of the venues of Lima 2019, has a young population that exceeds 40% and during the months of May and June will promote the Games. “We believe that this event will be a start point for the incursion of children and young people into sports, which will go hand in hand with their education, culture and recreation,” said Enrique Zevallos, manager of development and social inclusion.
“We must develop a work plan for young people and children, so that they can use this infrastructure,” said Zevallos regarding the legacy that will be left to the district.
Milco, the Games mascot, accompanied Dunia as part of the Lima 2019 promotional activities that seek to foster, through these events, the integration and Games values such as the union in the continent and among all people through sports.
