On the day the Pan American Torch was lit, Lima 2019 ambassador Thalía Mallqui visited the 6080 Rosa de América school for the “Soy Lima 2019” campaign.
At the central court of the school, over 350 students received the Lima 2019 organization and welcomed the athlete that, together with the official Games mascot Milco, exercised for 10 minutes as promoted by the Ministry of Education.
The socio-cultural activity prepared by Lima 2019, promoting Olympic and Paralympic values, was held right after that. Thalía Mallqui had then the opportunity to teach basic freestyle wrestling techniques to some students.
“I think it is a really nice idea because kids can meet athletes, learn more about other sports and the values taught and practiced by elite athletes,” said Mallqui.
“Wrestling is natural to all people and I wish teachers bring themselves to practice it at schools and that we can discover a potential wrestling athlete with the help of this campaign,” she said.
“Promoting “sport culture” is something that must be encouraged,” she added. Thalía also said that “the vision about sports is going to change because everyone will be able to witness international competitions and see world class athletes. I think this is great.”
Justiniano Aybar, principal of the above-mentioned school, thinks that promoting sport activities “encourages students to practice them. It can help them achieve their life projects as future responsible citizens, because sports create opportunities and help children forge their personalities.”
Villa El Salvador will be one of the venue districts of the Games. Karate and gymnastics will be held at Villa El Salvador Sports Center. It will also be hosting athletes, and that makes it something the locals of this district can be proud of, as it is a world class event. “We are an enterprising district and being a Games venue is a great motivation for us. It is a great opportunity for visitors to witness the marvels of our country, not only the cuisine, but also the people,” said the principal.
