The official delivery of the High-Performance Surf Center at Punta Rocas beach marks the culmination of the preparation for the Lima 2019 Games. This venue, the best of its type in the world, will host the most important multi-sports event in America for the first time and it will complement the preparation of the Peruvian team. The best 88 surfers in the continent and those from the Open Surf category will compete in their waves to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Games.
The ceremony was led by the President of COPAL, Carlos Neuhaus; the Mayor of Punta Negra, José Delgado; the President of the Peruvian National Surfing Federation, Alberto Figari; the Lima 2019 Project and Infrastructure Manager, Wilhelm Funcke and the CAR Punta Rocas Consortium Representative, José Iturriaga.
“It’s been a long journey to get to the end of this project. From getting permission to transform this land, that is the stage of Peruvian surfing, into a High-Performance Center that will remain as a surfing legacy. I trust it will be well-managed by the Federation,” stated the COPAL President.
The CAR Punta Rocas Consortium is the responsible for financing and executing the project. It is formed by six companies: Unión de Cervecerías Peruanas Backus y Johnston S.A.A, Supermercados Peruanos S.A., Scotiabank Perú S.A.A., Financiera Efectiva S.A., Unión Andina de Cementos S.A.A. and Union de Concreteras S.A. “It’s a privilege to have and infrastructure of this level, especially because it was delivered on time. The CAR Consortium members are very glad to have supported this project for the most inclusive sport in this country, which also gives us many achievements,” stated the CEO of Financiera Efectiva.
ABOUT THE HIGH-PERFORMANCE SURF CENTER
The Punta Rocas High-Performance Surf Center will have a stand with fixed seats for 700 people and temporary infrastructure for an additional of 750 people. This will create a capacity for 1400 people for the competition that will be held from July 29 to August 4 at Punta Rocas beach.
“The surfing family is happy with this brilliant construction that will remain for future generations. In these Games, we have high expectations of winning several medals and the members of the team have prepared for this competition level. We’ll feel more at home than ever in this great venue,” stated Figari.
Punta Rocas beach is closely related to surfing in Peru, since that year when Felipe Pomar conquered the waves for the first time and won the World Surfing Championship in 1965 for Peru. These Pan American Games will not be the exception. The tickets for the final session on August 3 are sold out, but there are still tickets for the preliminaries in www.lima2019.pe/tickets and in Teleticket.
