Lima 2019 Organizing Committee attended the drawing ceremony of the South American U-17 Championship to be held by March 21 in Peru. This will take place in the Stadium of the National University of San Marcos, which is being remodeled to host men's and women's football competitions at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.
The Project and Infrastructure Manager, Wilhelm Funcke; the President of the National University of San Marcos, Orestes Cachay; the CONMEBOL Competition Director, Hugo Figueredo; the Vice-president of the Peruvian Football Federation, Genaro Miñán; and the head of the FPF Youth Commission, Fernando Farah, attended the event, as honored guests.
Engineer Funcke announced that the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee has decided to support the Peruvian Football Federation in hosting the South American U-17 Championship, and lend the San Marcos Stadium facilities for that matter. This will be a great opportunity to test its facilities before the Pan American Games.
“We are remodeling the stadium as part of our major objectives set out for Lima 2019. “We are undertaking all necessary efforts to get the stadium ready by March 21 for the South American Championship opening. We support the Football Federation with pleasure, and this will allow us to show our modern venues”, stated Funcke.
Meanwhile, the CONMEBOL executive, Paraguayan Hugo Figueredo, stated he was grateful for the support received from Lima 2019 and the National University of San Marcos. “We are really grateful” he expressed.
Finally, according to the draw the Peruvian team will be in group A along with Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela and Chile. Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay and Paraguay will be in group B. The tournament starts on March 21 and will be held at the San Marcos Stadium, which will also be the main venue of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games. For this reason, Milco, the Lima 2019 official mascot, also attended the ceremony.
