The Lima 2019 Organizing Committee held at noon the draw of football groups and the competition schedule for the Pan American Games football, in men’s and women’s categories, to be held at the National University of San Marcos stadium.
The draw took place at the Main Auditorium of the Peruvian Football Federation, with the attendance of Carlos Neuhaus, Lima 2019 executive director; Agustín Lozano, president of the Peruvian Football Federation, Orestes Cachay, president of the National University of San Marcos; and Hugo Figueredo, International Technical Delegate and competition director of CONMEBOL.
International delegations’ representatives from Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina were invited; as well as the coaches who will direct men’s and women’s team, Nolberto Solano and Doriva Bueno, respectively. The latter was accompanied by Miriam Tristan and Cindy Novoa, members of the Peruvian National team.
Carlos Neuhaus highlighted the progress in the Lima 2019 organization and sports infrastructure for the country, thanks to the Pan American and Parapan American Games.
“We are working to deliver quality infrastructure such as San Marcos stadium, that was remodeled after being abandoned in recent years. This venue held the U17 South American Championship, athletes were satisfied, and many people enjoyed its facilities,” said the Lima 2019 executive director.
Neuhaus announced that the Bowling Center of VIDENA will be delivered this Saturday, as well as the Callao Sports Center and the Miguel Grau Coliseum of Callao, next Wednesday, April 17.
The president of San Marcos thanked Lima 2019 for choosing the stadium as a venue. “San Marcos gave life to the stadium thanks to Lima 2019. We have one of the best stadiums in Peru and we want Peruvians to have a great success with the Pan American Games. We will be on the spotlight, thanks to Lima 2019,” he said.
Meanwhile, the President of the Peruvian Football Federation took the opportunity to give his full support to Nolberto Solano as coach of the men’s national team. “We are happy to participate in this event. We trust “Ñol” with the team, because of his successful career and the experience he acquired working with Ricardo Gareca. As a Peruvian and as university president, we have the commitment of taking care of the infrastructure to increase the lifetime of stadiums and venues that Lima 2019 is leaving to us,” said Lozano.
GROUPS DRAW
Then, the groups draw of the teams qualified for Lima 2019 took place. Women’s football groups were divided in two: Paraguay, Colombia, Mexico and Jamaica Group in Group A and Peru, Argentina, Costa Rica and Panama in Group B.
Men’s football groups were also divided in two: Panama, Mexico, Ecuador and Argentina in Group A and Peru, Uruguay, Jamaica and Honduras in Group B.
Women’s football competition will start on July 28, from 10:00 whit Mexico and Jamaica in the opening match. At 13:00, Paraguay will go against Colombia. At 17:30, Panama and Costa Rica will face each other. The session ends at 20:30 with the duel between Peru and Argentina.
Men’s football starts on July 29, with Panama and Mexico match (10:00), then Ecuador will play against Argentina (13:00). At 17:30, Jamaica will face Honduras. The match closing the session will be feature Peru and Uruguay, at 20:30. (General Fixture in the attached document).
COMPETITION SYSTEM
The women’s category is scheduled for July 28 with a quadruple day that will start at 10:00 am. The men’s category starts on July 29, also with the first four matches of the two groups in the tournament. there will be two rest days for teams between date and date.
Matches in the Pan American Games will be governed under the FIFA rules. In the first phase, three points will be awarded for the winner and one for a tie. The first two teams from each group qualifies for semifinals and in case of a tie, it will be defined with extra time of 30 minutes. If equality persists, the penalty shoot-out will be used.
MODERN SCENARIO
The stadium of the National University of San Marcos is part of an improvement and modernization project. Works began in May 2018 and it was delivered on March 13, 2019, before the deadline initially set for March 31.
It includes an official field of play with an eight-lane athletic track, three grandstands for 21,000 spectators, a VIP box, an area for press, four changing rooms and a common area for athletes, an entrance and exclusive exit for athletes’ buses. In addition, it has warehouses for props.
ABOUT LIMA 2019
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games will open on July 26, 2019 at a ceremony which will take place at the National. This continental event will gather 6680 athletes from 41 countries and delegations from the Americas.
There will be 17 days of competitions and ceremonies between July 26 and August 11, 2019, which will take place in 14 districts of Lima and Callao at various venues like VIDENA, Villa María Sports Center, Callao Regional Village, Villa El Salvador Sports Center, Punta Rocas, among others.
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games will include 39 sports and 62 disciplines, in which athletes will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals A total of 23 disciplines are qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The Parapan American Games will gather 1890 Para athletes from 33 countries, participating in 17 sports and 18 disciplines. The competitions will take place between August 23 and September 1, 2019. 14 sports will be qualifiers for Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
