The renovated National Sports Village velodrome will be delivered by Lima 2019 to the Peruvian Cycling Federation this morning. This is regarded as one of the most important milestones in the Pan American and Parapan American Games organization. This facility was remodeled to comply with international standards, becoming one of the most modern facilities in this continent.
Lima 2019 Executive Director Carlos Neuhaus, will be in charge of delivering the velodrome to the Peruvian Cycling Federation president, Gustavo Matos de la Parra. Also present will be several Peruvian national team members who will take part in the international competition in this VIDENA facility.
The velodrome in the VIDENA venue was remodeled by Lima 2019 to host track cycling competitions at the Pan American Games and Para cycling track events at the Parapan American Games.
The velodrome features a 250-meter track made of African wood and, thanks to the remodeling work, it now has a roof which makes it an indoor sports stage.
This facility has capacity for 2300 spectators in comfortable seats. The track is seven meters wide. It has 42-degree slopes (elevations at the turns).
The velodrome is equipped with changing rooms and showers, a common area for competitors, a judges’ zone, a first-aid station for athletes and spectators, a mixed zone for accredited press and an doping control area.
The velodrome in VIDENA is finished and ready to start operating thanks to the certification of the Union Cycliste International (UCI), that verified that the sports stage was ready to host Lima 2019 competitions.
UCI official certifier, Randy Shafer (USA), arrived in Peru to supervise the state-of-the-art facilities. Shafer approved the track after verifying its current condition. The velodrome is now authorized to host track cycling and Para cycling track competitions at the Pan American and Parapan American Games, respectively.
The certifier also reviewed the competition track equipment that is part of the facility, such as the starting gate, photo finish camera, countdown clock and lap counter.
COMPETITIONS AT THE VELODROME
Ninety-five athletes from all over the Americas will take part in the track cycling competition. The Pan American Games competition will be held in this venue between August 1 and 4.
Around 16 male and female cyclists will represent Peru at the Games. Among them is Andrés Gonzales, who is currently training in Europe, as well as Rayner Navarro and Alonso Gamero, who will be participating in the middle-distance trials on this track and the road cycling competition in Costa Verde.
Sprint, keirin, omnium, team sprint, team pursuit and madison are the events that will take place at the Pan American Games as part of the track cycling competitions. Female cyclists will compete in the same events.
The Parapan American Games will feature individual pursuit and time trial competitions for the Para cycling track competition, to be held on August 26 and 27.
ABOUT LIMA 2019
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games is a continental event that will gather 6680 athletes from 41 countries and will open on July 26 at the National Stadium. There will be 17 days of competitions, which will take place in 14 districts of Lima and Callao. Some of the main venues will be VIDENA, Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center, Callao Regional Sports Village, Villa El Salvador Sports Center, Punta Rocas, among others.
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games will include 39 sports and 61 disciplines, in which athletes will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals. A total of 22 disciplines are qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The Parapan American Games will welcome 1890 Para athletes from 33 countries, who will participate in 17 Para sports and 18 disciplines. Competitions will take place from August 23 to September 1, 2019. Additionally, 13 Para sports will be qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
