One-hundred days before the start of the Lima 2019 Games, the Organizing Committee of the largest multi-sports event in the Americas achieved one of the most important milestones with the delivery of two new scenarios located at the Callao Regional Village: the Callao Sports Center and the Miguel Grau Coliseum.
So far, nine scenarios have been built or remodeled for the Lima 2019 Games and will be used by athletes. Among the projects that have already been delivered to the corresponding authorities are the stadiums for baseball, football, rugby and hockey; the warm-up track of the Athletics Stadium; the Bowling Center; and the Basque pelota and pelota fronton courts.
The Lima 2019 Executive Director Carlos Neuhaus, the Lima 2019 Project and Infrastructure Manager Wilhelm Funcke, the Callao regional Governor Dante Mandriotti, the Director of the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD) Sebastián Suito, the President of the Peruvian Volleyball Federation Pilar Gonzales and the National Paralympic Association of Peru and Chefs de Mission of the Peruvian Para athletes delegation José Gonzáles Mugaburu attended this ceremony, where the agreement for use of this venue was signed.
“We want to promote sports and make this place an important area for volleyball in the country. We needed such scenario in this part of Lima. This sports center is modern but not fancy. It meets all sporting requirements,” Mr. Neuhaus said.
“The Government made a commitment to provide benefits for the young Peruvians and develop sports in the country. We hope that the future users of this area maintain it properly,” said Mr. Funcke.
The new sports center, located in the Callao Regional Village, will be the first competition venue in our country to be built with features of Callao’s culture.
The general structure and main roof of this Lima 2019 venue was designed based on patterns of the first port and existing old houses in Callao; as well as ocean wave shapes.
In this sense, the regional governor of Callao thanked the Peruvian Government’s efforts made through Lima 2019 by investing in this region, so all Peruvians have top-level infrastructure.
“This is a world-class scenario and we want to maintain it. The Callao region and people in Callao will be great hosts. We also promise to maintain it and invite all Peruvians to come and practice sports here.”
On the other hand, the president of the Peruvian Volleyball Federation Pilar Gonzales assured that it is a historic day for this popular sport in Peru.
“It is a historic day for us. It is an honor to receive this scenario, which is the best of all South America. There’s now a commitment to work here and make this place the main scenario for Volleyball.”
The IPD’s president was impressed by the great infrastructure progress made by Lima 2019.
“100 before the start of a historic event in Peru, which will represent a great change in our country. I have no doubt that Lima 2019 is going to foster a culture involving sports and health that all Peruvians need,” he said.
In this sense, the representative of the National Paralympic Association of Peru (ANPP) was clearly excited to see the remodeling works of the Miguel Grau Coliseum, venue for thegoalball competitions during the Parapan American Games.
“I had never been in a scenario specially conditioned for people with impairments. The Parapan American Games will be important, not only because we will witness the competitions, but also because we will practice sports.”
This modern sports center will have a capacity for 6100 people and will be one of the greatest legacies of Lima 2019. Additionally, this venue will transform Callao in one important hub for sports development in Peru.
This sport venue has a floating sports floor system of around 4300 m2, which is perfect for professional volleyball, and the distance between columns in its roof spatial structure is 95 meters. Besides, it will have retractable grandstands.
It should be noted that the latest technology was used for its construction.

The Miguel Grau Coliseum has been entirely remodeled. The evacuation stairs were expanded, and access ramps were also installed. The works also include the installation of an elevator for people with an impairment, so they can access the VIP box and the conference room.
The Callao Regional Village will also host the racquetball competitions. This venue has two existing courts near the sports center and two additional courts will be built for simultaneous competitions during Lima 2019.
