The Lima 2019 Games General Manager, Alberto Valenzuela, highlighted that the Pan American and Parapan American Games Organizing Committee was able to complete the sports infrastructure works on time and within the designated budget.
“It is the first time in the history of the Olympic and Pan American sports events that we've finished on time and under budget. This is an unprecedented achievement that involves international actors and the Peruvian government,” he explained in an interview for the media.
Valenzuela, who was appointed General Manager of the Games two weeks ago by Carlos Neuhaus, President of COPAL, pointed out that they were able to guarantee an Olympic-class event, both in sports and service organization terms, for the Pan American and Parapan American Games.
“We are breaking records compared to the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games and, in doing so, we will provide a wonderful show. An unprecedented event for our country and continent.”
When asked about the challenges of facing traffic in Lima, Alberto Valenzuela explained Lima 2019´s international commitment to transporting the athletes from their accommodation to their competition venues in no more than 45 minutes per trip. For example, in the tests carried out on the segregated lane, it took 23 minutes to travel from the Pan American and Parapan American Village in Villa El Salvador to the Videna venue in San Luis.
He also provided additional details regarding the actions taken to reduce traffic during the Games.
“The good news is that we worked in collaboration with the Ministry of Education to modify the school holiday calendar. Now it will start on July 30 and end on August 11, the same period as the Pan American Games. We have also been working jointly with the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Labor and the President of the Cabinet of Ministers to declare July 26, the day of the opening ceremony, and Saturday, July 27, the day of the Marathon which will go through the entire city, national holidays.”
Before ending the interview, the General Manager of the Games urged Peruvians to be good hosts and change our attitude when behind the wheel.
