The Lima 2019 Organizing Committee reaffirmed its commitment to comply with all established construction deadlines with the handover of the rugby-7 fields to the national teams. The official delivery ceremony will be held tonight. The venue, to be used for training before the Games, is ready to host the best rugby players in the region.
Among the attendees will be Wilhelm Funcke,Lima 2019Project and Infrastructure manager; Néstor Corbetto, president of the Peruvian Rugby Federation; and Santiago Ramallo, international technical delegate of World Rugby (world organization that regulates the sport). Members of the national teams will also attend this official event.
The competition will take place between July 26 and 28 and the Peruvian women’s team has already confirmed its participation. Among the possible rivals are Brazil, Argentina, Canada, United States, Mexico, and Trinidad and Tobago. Additionally, the eight qualified team of South America will be defined.
The men’s team, called “Los Tumis”, will seek its qualification in a South American tournament to be held between May and June. The rugby-7 teams than will participate in the Lima 2019 Games are the two-time Pan American champion Canada, along with Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, United States, Jamaica and Guyana.
COMPETITION SYSTEM
Rugby-7 will be disputed in women and men categories, in two groups of four teams each. Then, they will compete in the quarter finals, according to the ranking in the first stage in order to define the four semifinalists. Finally, the two best teams compete the last day for the gold medal.
In contrast to Rugby Union (15 players in a rugby team), it is played in two 7-minute periods, with a 2-minute break. If scores are still tied, a sudden-death overtime will be played in 5-minute periods. Therefore, the competition will last only three days and each team will play two games per day.
ABOUT LIMA 2019
The Opening Ceremony of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games will be held at the National Stadium on July 26, 2019. This continental event will gather 6680 athletes from 41 countries and delegations from the Americas.
There will be 17 days of competitions and ceremonies, between July 26 and August 11, which will take place in 14 districts of Lima and Callao at various venues like VIDENA, Villa María Sports Center, Callao Regional Village, Villa El Salvador Sports Center, Punta Rocas, among others.
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games will include 39 sports and 62 disciplines, where athletes will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals. A total of 23 disciplines are qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 the Olympic Games.
