Ten Peruvian athletes participating in the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games were portrayed by nine artists, who showed their talent on the facade of Carlos A. Moscoso Municipal Stadium in Surquillo.
The artwork, which shows the athletes' faces and scenes of their performance in their sports disciplines, are part of the ‘Muros que unen’ campaign. This seeks other municipalities and walls of the city count on artists to fill them of colors and passion for sports.
The Municipality of Surquillo was the first to offer its district's walls in recognition of the Peruvian athletes representing the country. After Lima 2019 made an open call through social media, the urban artists were selected to use the emblematic Moscoso Stadium facade as their canvas.
Juan Antonio Silva, Lima 2019 Communications, Commercial and Marketing manager, claimed that the initiative is within the fundamental purposes of the Games, which goes beyond sports: to positively transform Peru starting from the Games values.
“I want to thank Municipality of Surquillo and mayor Casassa for making the perimeter walls of the Stadium available for this initiative, #Murosqueunen. Second, I want to thank the artists who gave us their work, art, talent, and time to make it come true. Third, I also want to thank the athletes for showing that when we Peruvians want to do something, we do it well.”
In turn, the mayor of Surquillo stated that Lima 2019 must engage all institutions and Peruvians in equal measure.
“I realized that the walls and the city speak, and the city has something to tell Lima that the Pan American and Parapan-American Games are here. Everyone who passes by and sees the walls will fall in love with the athletes. Above all, I want to thank Lima 2019 for putting its trust in the district of Surquillo. The duty of both municipalities and their mayors is to give all we have to Lima 2019,” he added.
URBAN ART
Along the wall, on the busy Av. Tomás Marsano, it is now possible to see the heroic faces of some of the Peruvian athletes and Para-athletes who will represent us at Lima 2019: Pedro Pablo de Vinatea, South American badminton champion; Efraín Sotacuro, fifth place at the London 2019 Marathon World Championships; Pilar Jáuregui, Lima 2019 ambassador and Para badminton player; Alejandra Callirgos, member of the Peruvian wheelchair basketball team; Israel Hilario, Para cycling athlete, Dunia Felices, Lima 2019 ambassador and Para swimming athlete, Alonso Valdez, horse rider who participated in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games; Marcela Castillo, regarded as the best Latin American taekwondo fighter; Hernán Viera, Peru’s strongest man and powerlifting competitor; and Alexandra Grande, placed fifth in the karate world ranking and gold medalist at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games.
