The new Callao Sports Center, located in the Regional Sports Village, will be the first competition stage in the country with an infrastructure based on Callao's culture.
The main ceiling and general structure of this sports stage, venue of the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games, were designed based on the shapes of the first port and old houses in Callao, as well as on the sea waves.
The modern Sports Center will have a capacity for up to 6 100 people and will remain as one of the Lima 2019 main legacies. Also, it will transform Callao in a significant hub for sports development in Peru.
“Currently, this work has reached a 85% of its total. We’re meeting all the deadlines. We made a promise to the coach of the women’s volleyball team, Francisco Hervás, that his team would be able to train here from April 1,” stated Engineer Wilhelm Funcke, Lima 2019 Project and Infrastructure Manager.
Competitions
For Lima 2019, this great sports infrastructure will host men and women volleyball and taekwondo tournaments, as well as sitting volleyball and Para taekwondo competitions for the Parapan American Games. Also, this Sports Center will have a main field and a warm-up area with two fields.
“We have already started placing the floating field, which may reduce athletes’ injuries,” said the official.
Work progress
Works continue at a good pace, complying with the schedule. To date, the ceiling will be totally covered after placing the metal structure in the main and auxiliary field of the Sports Center. Access ramps for the stands are almost finished. This zone has reached a 85% of work progress.
Also, bathrooms, dressing rooms and floors are being finished, firefighting water and the sewer system of these areas have been installed, as well as the polished floor in main traffic areas. Roll-up doors and elevators for the four stands will be installed later. These have reached 90% of work progress.
Work completion and specifications
The Callao Sports Center will have a roof structure of 95 m of clearance between columns, and floating sports floor of around 4 300 m2 for professional volleyball.
It will also have retractable grandstands. It should be noted that we are using the highest technology to build a world-class scenario like this.
This new Sports Center, including outdoor spaces, is expected to be ready by March 31, 2019.
