LIMA 2019 ORGANIZES AWARENESS WORKSHOP "IMPAIRMENT AND AIRPORT OPERATIONS FOR PARA SPORTS EVENTS"

The awareness workshop "Impairment and Airport Operations for Para Sports Events" was carried out by the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee to prepare organizations that will be in contact with 1890 Para athletes and more than 900 technical officials participating in the Parapan American Games.

This activity took place at the Jorge Chávez International Airport to raise awareness of various participants that will be in contact with Para athletes from 32 countries in the Americas.

This event organized by the Lima 2019 Operations Management, through the Arrivals and Departures department, included the participation of different entities working at the airport, such as the divisions of the Peruvian National Police, INDECI, Customs, Immigrations, SENASA, SUCAMEC, the General Directorate for Civil Aviation; as well as the airport and main airlines personnel, who will interact with delegations of the Americas next August when they arrive in our country.

During the workshop, participants were able to know the importance of the Parapan American Games for our country, which will be held from August 23 to September 1. They also listened to the experience of two Para athletes: Ileana Rodríguez, former American swimmer and Americas Paralympic Committee athlete representative; and Fred Villalobos, Judo national team member, who will compete in the Parapan American Games.

The Para athletes gave some tips to the participants, so their colleagues do not have problems when they arrive in our country. They were made aware of the need to treat people with impairments properly, such as Fred Villalobos, who will compete with visual impairment.

Paul Freudensprung, operations coordinator of the International Paralympic Committee, was also one of the speakers at the workshop. He introduced some examples of experiences in international competitions such in the London 2012 Olympic Games. Freudensprung announced that between 800 and 900 Para athletes in wheelchairs will compete in Lima 2019.

This kind of workshops leave an important legacy because people could learn about the proper treatment of people with an impairment in our country after the Games.

The workshop also addressed topics such as impairment, treatment and protocol; the athlete's experience in Para Sports Games: arrivals and departures; and good practices in airport operations.

The first challenge for the airport personnel will be the welcome of the Americas' best representatives of Para powerlifting with 47 Para athletes, who will compete in the Lima 2019 World Cup (Lima 2019 Test Event) to be held starting from next May 3 at VIDENA.
