LIMA 2019: THE PAN AMERICAN TORCH IN CUZCO

As it was announced yesterday, at the Pan American Torch Lighting Ceremony celebrated in Teotihuacan, the Pan American Flame arrived today in Cuzco and so the two ancient American cultures united through a path of fire drawn in the skies: inside a lamp case, the Flame traveled by plane from Mexico, arriving to the other American historic Capital.

As proof of this union, the aircraft that landed at Teniente Alejandro Velasco Astete international Airport in Cuzco city, bore a painting by artist Joan Jiménez Suero –better known as Entes– that read: “Let's go Latin America”

The president of the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee, Carlos Neuhaus; the Mayor of Lima, Jorge Muñoz; Panam Sports President, Neven Ilic; and LATAM Corporate Manager, Antonio Olortegui, were all present to welcome the Pan American Torch.

“Yesterday, in Teotihuacan, we attended a great ceremony for the lighting of the Pan American Torch. Today, via the transfer of the Pan American Flame, we are uniting the two ancient American cultures out of the four worldwide. It will start its journey in Machu Picchu as an honor and an act of respect towards our traditions and to strengthen the union between peoples and all countries of the Americas. While the Games will be held in Lima, all of Peru will be playing.”, stated Neuhaus.

Chosen as starting point for the Torch Relay in our country. Cuzco embraced the Pan American Flame in the midst of celebrations. Cuzco’s main square is decorated with different torch representations for the pleasure of the locals as well as the hundreds of foreign visitors.

In this regard, the Mayor of Lima celebrated the relevance of the imperial city in such an important event to Lima 2019, like the Pan American Torch Relay, and highlighted the impact of the Games in the capital in terms of attendance.

“it's a pleasure to be with you and with all the directors for the Lima 2019 Games, this morning . It is an honor to be in this beautiful and historic city, starting the countdown towards the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games. Eight thousand athletes will be participating and 14 thousand people, including delegations and guests, will arrive to Lima. There will also be 75 thousand tourists.” he said.

Meanwhile, Ilic addressed the people from Cuzco and the Peruvians in general assuring great Games.

“It is a great honor to arrive to Cuzco with the Pan American Fire. We lit this fire in the emblematic city of Teotihuacan and today we start the road to the National Stadium of Lima on the 26. Tomorrow will be a historic day. I wish the best to Peru. You have worked so much and we all deserve huge success at the Pan Americans”.

The LATAM Corporate Manager, on his part, thanked Lima 2019 for the trust and assured the official Games airline is completely prepared to bring light to all corners of Peru with the Pan American Fire.

“We have been preparing for this day for months and I think will make Peru proud. We thank Lima 2019 for trusting us to be the official airline for such an important event.
