Lima 2019 Ambassadors Dunia Felices and Thalia Mallqui, together with the Pan American and Parapan American Games official mascot Milco, participated in a multi-sports festival at the Quest Overseas School in the district of Villa María del Triunfo with the support of the British Embassy in Peru.
The 150 children, who were split into twelve teams that competed in six different sports, could not contain their joy when they saw Milco, who cheered all of them on and was given a standing ovation from all the festival’s attendees.
“It’s important for us to promote physical activity on the occasion of the Lima 2019 Games because we’re thinking about the sports legacy and the great impact it may have on outskirts of the city,” said Kate Harrison, UK ambassador to Peru.
“This is something very special. As ambassador, these kind of activities really touch me because not all children in Lima have the same opportunities to play and learn the sports that will be a part of the Lima 2019 Games,” Harrisson added.
Additionally, Dunia Felices, a prominent Para athlete, took this opportunity to address the children and parents who gathered at the school playground. “I want to tell you that nothing that you set your mind on is impossible. I’m a quadruple amputee and I do Para swimming, which has always been one of my dreams since I was little.”
In turn, wrestler Thalia Mallqui said: “I’m happy to see so many children playing sports. We’re just one step away from the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center, venue of the Games. This will allow you to enjoy the performances of the continent’s best athletes and will give you the chance to grow as a person and develop in the sports field.
During this sporting event, Lima 2019 took the opportunity to promote Para sports football 5-a-side and wheelchair basketball. They were very well received by the school children and teachers.
It is worth mentioning that British volunteers also attended the multi-sports festival at the Quest Overseas School. They continue to foster the volunteering culture that remained as legacy after the 2012 London Olympic Games. Lima 2019 also aims to replicate this in Peru.
