LIMA 2019 PERFORMS TEST RUN OF THE PAN AMERICAN AND PARAPAN AMERICAN VILLAGE

They spent a different morning in the heart of Villa El Salvador. More than 500 volunteers of the Peruvian Army, the National University of San Marcos, and outstanding athletes and Para athletes participated in the test run of the seven buildings of the Pan American and Parapan American Village. In July, the village will become the main accommodation venue of athletes and technical officials in Lima 2019.

Thus, Lima 2019 met one of their commitments for the biggest multi-sport event in the continent: finishing this important venue ahead of time, scheduled to be completed by March 31. The construction was totally completed with enough time to perform test runs, which were made today.

The visit included the participation of Lima 2019 Executive Director, Carlos Neuhaus; Deputy Minister of Transport, Carlos Estremadoyro; Brigadier General, Carlos Alberto Rabanal Calderón, Director of Chorrillos Military School “Coronel Francisco Bolognesi”; Villa El Salvador Deputy mayor, Eloy Chávez; Lima 2019 Project and Infrastructure Manager, Wilhelm Funcke; and the Lima 2019 Operations Manager, Alberto Valenzuela.

Carlos Neuhaus highlighted the sustainable added value of the Pan American and Parapan American Village land. “This Village will become a great hotel with fully accessible and comfortable apartments. The construction started in December 2017 and by July 2018 we already had the buildings constructed. Now, all of them are fully enabled; they have light, water, drainage and gas. They meet international standards and they are ready to be inhabited,” he stated.

“We are complying with all set challenges. We are providing various scenarios in different venues such as Villa María del Triunfo. I think that we are making progress toward Lima 2019 Games,” Neuhaus said.

On the other hand, the Deputy Minister of Transport expressed that the village construction was a challenge assumed by the government. “It was a big challenge and now we have finished the village. When the President (Martín Vizcarra) was the Ministry of Transport and Communications, he decided to build the village and we assumed the most important challenge as a government. We seized this land that was an under-the-rubble dumpster. The village has been the first mission completed by Lima 2019. The most important thing here is the high-quality infrastructure legacy for Lima. Now, we only have to enjoy the Games”, Estremadoyro expressed.

Visiting the buildings

After a brief official ceremony, some authorities, army personnel, volunteers and athletes visited the village buildings and apartments to test the accessibility, modern elevators and services of water, drainage and electricity that were installed to receive future guests.

The women’s and men's categories of hockey and the Para swimming, Para taekwondo and Para powerlifting representatives also participated in this operation and visited the venue where they will live with the sports delegations representatives during Lima 2019 Games time.

At the end of the test, Lima 2019 reported that utilities worked optimally and simultaneously on all building stories and are 100% operational. The athletes and Para athletes were able to check the comforts and accessibility at the accommodation venue.

The village has 1096 apartments, 548 of them of 70 m2, 212 of 73 m2 and 336 of 75 m2. These last apartments have been modified to be accessible for people with impairments. Each building has four elevators with capacity for up to 18 people and wheelchair access.

At the end of 2018, the finishing works of four buildings, one with 20 stories and 3 with 19 stories were finished. The Pan American and Parapan American Village, main hosting venue, will receive around 10,000 residents during the Pan American and Parapan American Games.

Accessible residential complex

The main accommodation venue for Lima 2019 will become the largest accessible accommodation facility in the country. In order to facilitate the commute of Lima 2019 athletes with visual impairments, the village will have podotactile paving in the pedestrian areas and the bike lane.

Also, the implementation of braille signage on all the floors of the Pan American and Parapan American Village concluded last December.

This “universal language” warns and informs people about the flow and necessary measures in case of an event endangering an athlete with visual impairment.

This system was also placed in the elevators’ dials, which are located at the ends of each tower.

These buildings also have spacious inner corridors and 28 elevators to facilitate the transit of people with impairments who have to move around in a wheelchair.

The Pan American and Parapan American Village is a monumental work that will leave an important housing legacy for the population of Villa El Salvador and the country. Its future residents will be able to live in apartments made with the highest standards.
