LIMA 2019 PRESENTED THE ANTI-DOPING KITS FOR THE PAN AMERICAN AND PARAPAN AMERICAN GAMES

The Lima 2019 Organizing Committee presented the official anti-doping kits that will be used during the Pan American and Parapan American Games.

This presentation, held at the doping control station in the Athletics Stadium at VIDENA, was attended by Alberto Valenzuela, Lima 2019 Operations Manager, Bernardo Chernilo, president of the Panam Sports Medical Commission, and Victor Carpio, Lima 2019 Anti-Doping manager.

There will be a total of 32 doping control stations during the Lima 2019 Games. The stations located inside VIDENA (Athletic Stadium, Velodrome, Bowling Center, Aquatic Center and Sports Center 3), Callao Sports Center, Miguel Grau Coliseum, Villa El Salvador Sports Center, Las Palmas Shooting Range, and the football stadium of the National University of San Marcos will be permanent for future competitions after the Games, as part of the important legacy that Lima 2019 will leave to the country.

For these Pan American and Parapan American Games, stations that meet international standards have been designed from scratch, along with the infrastructure project design.

Valenzuela highlighted the great effort made by Lima 2019, since not only the doping control stations will remain as a legacy, but also the operational experience of the chain of custody and supply of the samples.

"The stations will be part of the legacy that Lima 2019 will leave to the country and sports in general. It is the first time that an event of such magnitude has been organized, but also that so many controls have been made, especially with these security systems. There is an entire chain of custody and supply that will guarantee that samples arrive safely at the laboratory," said the Lima 2019 Operations Manager.

Furthermore, Bernardo Chernilo emphasized the importance of the medical-sport legacy that Lima 2019 will leave.

"The whole infrastructure, the experience and the personnel training will remain as a legacy. Lima 2019 is leaving a really great thing for Peru Peru after the Games," said the president of the Panam Sports Medical Commission.

Meanwhile, Victor Carpio provided details on the selection process of athletes who will undergo doping tests, indicating that there are three different methods.

"Random selection will be applied in team sports. There is another type of selection determined by results. But the World Anti-doping Agency recommends the intelligent or targeted selection for this type of events, in which the experience of the Medical Commission — of Panam Sports— and all the history of athletes (behavior in social networks, previous controls) add up to make the controls much more efficient and not left to chance", stated the Lima 2019 Anti-doping Manager.

Anti-doping tests

Different kits are used in the doping control of athletes, depending on the type of control. They can be: urine and blood sample kits and partial sample kits.

To date, Lima 2019 has purchased 2200 urine kits, 370 blood kits and 1000 partial sample kits, as well as 600 collection cups (for each urine kit there is a collection cup; however, this acquisition has been made for partial sample cases).

The first type of kit consists of two bottles (A and B), protected by a cardboard or EPS box. Urine collected minutes before in the plastic collection cup will be placed in these boxes, made especially for doping controls. The kit will have an identification code number.

The second consists of two tubes for sealing and transporting the sample. This kit will also have an identification code number. In addition, the blood sample will be transported to the laboratory with a chip to monitor the transportation temperature. Meanwhile, the third type of kit will be used when the athlete provides a urine sample of less than 90 ml.

Sample analysis

The sample collection center will be located at the VIDENA (gate 2). As part of the chain of custody, samples from all competition venues will be stored and all documents will be prepared before being transferred to the laboratory in Montreal, Canada. This lab is accredited by WADA, where samples will be analyzed in a maximum of 72 hours.

These doping controls will be critical to ensure clean games in all competitions held during the most important multi-sports event of the continent. The Games will also leave a culture of values and professionalism in the local sporting world as a legacy, which will be perpetuated through doping control stations.
