LIMA 2019 INTRODUCES ARTISTS WHO WILL BE PART OF CULTURAYMI PROGRAM

Lima 2019 introduced the winners of the five categories of the Culturaymi Cultural Programs Contest. This cultural program, which will take place simultaneously with the sport competitions, will showcase the different expressions and artistic points of view that coexists in Peru and connect them with the Games for the national and international community.

The Lima 2019 manager of Communications, Commercialization and Marketing, Juan Antonio Silva and the Minister of Culture, Ulla Holmquist, participated in the event.

Addressing the 46 selected artists, Silva highlighted the importance of the Games as a platform to showcase our culture to the world.

“Your participation will allow us to showcase Peruvian culture. An estimated 400 million people will watch the Games, the competitions and the ceremonies and Cultural Program alike, which will present us in a new light. Peru is more than history; it’s also culture and natural richness. Let’s take advantage of the occasion to show our art to the world,” he stated.

On her part, the Minister of Culture assured that Lima 2019 will be a great opportunity to celebrate us as a country and show ourselves as a diverse and resilient society through art.

“We’re a country of creators. Pan American and Parapan American Games are a great opportunity. We will have the chance to use art to talk to our neighbors about ourselves, who are coming here to share and enjoy a good competition. During this event, let us use competition as an opportunity to show our strengths,” she assured.

The number of artists selected in the five categories considered in the call—for which over 400 people registered through the Lima 2019 website—, were: Art for social transformation workshops (8), clothing design (5), visual arts exhibition (2), artistic performances (18) and music shows (13).

Among those selected is the daughter of singer/songwriter Chabuca Granda, Teresa Fuller Granda, who together with Argentinian singer, Ezequiel Rocha, will present the record documentary show “With Chabuca Grand Soul.”

“It’s a show we both do with 16 of Chabuca’s songs, including two unreleased songs, with the music of Argentinian artist, Domingo Rulo. Ezequiel sings and I tell the stories behind the lyrics. It’s really an honor for us to be at the Pan American Games,” stated Fuller.

“We will also be celebrating early Chabuca’s Bicentennial, which is in 2020. For this show, that we have been doing for the past five years, to come back to Lima for the Pan Americans is as if sent by Chabuca,” mentioned Ezequiel.

Likewise, members of the cultural collective La Casa de Tespis, Gonzalo Francisco Talavera Silva Santisteban and Andrea Fernández, whose theater project “El monstruo de los mares” seeks to raise awareness about caring for the environment, expressed their enthusiasm.

“For this project to be part of an event as big as Lima 2019 moves us and makes us grateful. We know we will reinforce the message of Cuturaymi, of theater, recycling and caring for the environment, which are so necessary right now. I think it will resonate and we hope to touch the hearts and minds of the people, families and institutions,” commented Talavera.

“Lima 2019 is a chance for the world, and for anyone who comes and participates of this celebration of sports and life, to also relate to culture and all we have to offer as a country,” said Fernández.

SELECTION PROCESS

During this phase, three experts per category were called to take on the role of jury, taking into consideration the selection criteria detailed in the terms. The jury´s deliberation was from June 26 to 28 of this year, and resulted in 46 winners in five categories. The results were announced on July 3 on the Lima 2019 website.

The selection criteria considered were: innovation, artistic quality, esthetic coherence, link to the issues of vulnerable populations, among others.

ABOUT THE CULTURAL PROGRAM

During 38 days, Lima will live a cultural and sports celebration. Culturaymi, the Cultural Program for the Lima 2019 Games, has been created to celebrate and spread the creative and cultural richness of our country.

The Cultural Program will have a venue and Cultural Circuit. The cultural venue will be a space that will house an array of cultural events, such us workshops, exhibitions, concerts, shows, crafts, food and more. It will be located at Parque de la Exposicion from July 27 to August 10 and from August 24 to 31. It will be free of charge.

On the other hand, the Cultural Circuit consists of a tour of over 10 districts that offer the most cultural activities, exhibitions and shows, to organize a diverse and attractive calendar.

The Call for Cultural Projects has served to design a diverse program at the cultural venue, which includes esthetic points of view and innovative proposals regarding the values of Lima 2019.

It has also been an opportunity for artists to obtain funding for their projects and to be showcased in front of a million people in the cultural venue. This ensures transparency and equal opportunities for the artistic community of Peru.
