The Special Project for the Planning and Development of the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games, in charge of the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), presented the Lima 2019 Games Official Uniforms at Peru Moda, the international textile fair that highlights the best of the Peruvian fashion industry.
The launch event, held at the Lima Convention Center, unveiled the uniforms that will be used by more than 19,000 Lima 2019 volunteers, collaborators, referees and torchbearers during the most important multi-sport event in the continent.
The event was attended by the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism Edgar Vásquez; the president of Panam Sports, Neven Ilic, the Lima 2019 executive director Carlos Neuhaus, the member of the International Olympic Committee Iván Dibós, Lima 2019 executive secretary Amalia Moreno; and the head of the Lima 2019 Volunteer Program Ángela Morales.
"The Games mean uniforms, competition venues, entire cities around venues. We say “Let’s All Play” to show our tradition as great hosts," said Lima 2019 Executive Director Carlos Neuhaus.
He remarked that volunteers are really the soul of the Games and its most important representatives. "In September we launched the call for volunteers and established that we needed 12,000 volunteers for the Pan American Games and 7,000 for the Parapan American Games, and we thought that around 40,000 were needed for the selection process. To date, we have over 100,000 people that responded the call with great enthusiasm. Today, we have come to see the volunteers uniform presentation ; whenever we see these uniforms, let’s help the volunteers so they can help too,” he said.
Furthermore, Neven Ilic said "today, something really important is happening with the Games image, which is already in a very good road, and which is not only about sports and venues, but also about the quality and integration of Peruvian citizens and youth. And that is achieved through volunteers. There is a saying in Olympism: "volunteers are the heart and soul of the Games."
He added that "we had we had big companies and international brands that wanted to design and produce the uniform for volunteers, referees and judges, but the Organizing Committee ratified its commitment to do that in Peru, with small and micro companies, because everyone needed to be involved in these processes. Peru, the whole country, shines brightly in these Pan American Games, in all its areas."
The uniforms design reflects our identity, culture and values through its elements and colors. These uniforms are part of the benefits of the Volunteer Program that will be delivered to about 19,000 volunteers and collaborators that will be the workforce of the Games.
Through MYPErú program, Lima 2019 acquired more than 172,000 clothing items that will be distributed in June. The uniforms manufacture is part of previous purchases made through the same program, authorized by Supreme Decree No. 064-2019-EF, with a budget transfer of PEN 13,497,548. 80% correspond to textile acquisitions. In this way, the development of the micro and small manufacturing companies that will improve their productivity in the formalization and generation of employment is promoted.
The 41 National Olympic Committees forming Panam Sports will participate in the Lima 2019 Pan American Games —the most important multi-sport event in the continent and the second most important in the world, only after the Olympic and Paralympic Games— , and they will bring together 6,680 athletes participating in 39 sports and 62 disciplines between July 26 and August 11.
Likewise, the Parapan American Games will gather 1,890 athletes participating in 17 sports and 18 disciplines, between August 23 and September 1.
Lima 2019 will be a qualifying event for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which guarantees the presence of the top athletes in these sport disciplines.
