Today, the world celebrates the Play True Day. In the fight against doping in sports, Lima 2019 launched the educational anti-doping booth to be used in the Games, as part of the “LET’S ALL PLAY, LET’S PLAY TRUE” campaign.
Ambassadors Marcela Castillo, Thalía Mallqui, Paola Mautino, Yanet Sovero, and Para athlete Neil García visited the educational booth, very similar to the one that will be in use during the Pan American and Parapan American Village in Villa El Salvador, where they participated answering interactive questionnaires to receive information about doping prevention.
The subjects addressed in these interactive questionnaires were the good habits for the use of medicines and nutritional supplements, the doping control processes, the prohibited substances list, the therapeutic exemption processes and the dangers of doping for health.
This kind of experiences are used to complement trainings and lectures given to athletes to prevent doping in Lima 2019.
At this launch ceremony, Alberto Valenzuela, Lima 2019 Operations Manager, said that “it is crucial to invite each athlete to be part of Play True, through training mechanisms, so the Games can make history.”
Thalía Mallqui added that “your desire to get good results implies that you do it in a clean way, and the best way is to be informed about the substances that may harm you.”
“When you win a medal, you can be in peace with yourself knowing that you played true and you only needed your abilities and self-confidence”, added the wrestler Yanet Sovero.
Carlos Zegarra, president of the National Anti-doping Committee (CONAD) said that “medals are not injected, they are earned with effort and dedication. That is why we want to ensure, through training, that results come from a Play True approach.”
For this reason, CONAD has developed the “Road to Lima 2019” anti-doping course, that will be on the IPD (Peruvian Institute of Sports) website to inform the Peruvian delegation about the dangers of doping and the risks of being penalized for using prohibited substances during the Games.
“We did not have that many information before. It is important for new athletes, so they may research themselves and be aware of play true values for athletes,” said Lima 2019 ambassador Marcela Castillo.
The event was a good occasion to present the 2800 blood and urine anti-doping kits specially prepared for Lima 2019, that will be used for test performed during the Games.
Lima 2019 wants, through these informative and educational actions, to make Pan American and Parapan American athletes aware of their rights and obligations so they can compete in a clean environment. This is possible because talking about anti-doping means ensuring health in sports.
