LIMA 2019 PRESENTS PROGRESS IN VILLA MARÍA DEL TRIUNFO SPORTS CENTER 200 DAYS BEFORE THE START OF THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES

The Softball Stadium has synthetic grass in the main and auxiliary fields. Thanks to this progress, the Peruvian softball team could make an exhibition.

The Sports Center is one of Lima 2019 main venues for team sports, and it will remain as a legacy for the athletes and people living in the south of Lima.

Two-hundred days before the start of the Pan American and Parapan American Games, Lima 2019 showed an important infrastructure progress in the main sites of the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center, one of the future main venues for team sports during the most important multi-sports event of the continent.

The president of Lima 2019, Carlos Neuhaus Tudela, the Project and Infrastructure Manager, Wilhelm Funcke, the Peruvian wrestler and Lima 2019 Ambassador, Thalía Mallqui, and members of the Peruvian softball and baseball teams attended this event.

The tour included a visit to the Aquatic Center, that will host water polo competitions during Lima 2019 Pan American Games. Currently, the pool is being filled with water to conduct recirculation, heating and chlorination tests. The Olympic pool has 50 meters in length, 25 meters in width and 2.20 meters in depth.

Synthetic grass was installed in the main and auxiliary fields of the Softball Stadium, which material is approved by international organisms. At this stadium, 1524 seats were also installed in the stands. In addition, 1806 modern seats were placed in the stands of the Baseball Stadium.

In this regard, Lima 2019 President, Carlos Neuhaus Tudela, highlighted the great progress made on the fields of this sports scenario. “The Sports Center will be ready in March this year. The Aquatic Center pool is ready, as well as the softball field where the Peruvian softball team can train. There are still some details but all stadiums are almost completed,” he stated.

Regarding transit to the Sports Center, Neuhaus pointed out that “we’ve had many coordination meetings with the mayor of Lima, Jorge Muñoz, and our teams (Lima 2019) are also working on prioritizing all public access and will provide easy access to public transportation and bicycles,” he expressed.

The Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center is one of the Lima 2019 large construction works and will include two hockey fields, two rugby fields, two softball fields, a baseball field, four basque pelota courts, four fronton courts, as well as an Aquatic Center for water polo. The archery competition will also be held in this venue.

Softball and baseball exhibition

Meanwhile, the members of the Peruvian softball and baseball teams recognized the great progress of the facilities, visited the future fields for the Lima 2019 Games and made an exhibition of their respective sports. It is the first time that Peruvian athletes have the opportunity to practice at their competition scenarios.

It is important to stress that the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center will have top-level infrastructure that will remain as a legacy for athletes and people living in the south of Lima.

Completed stands

Another great progress of this sports center is the completion of the Aquatic Center stands, the hockey, baseball, softball, rugby fields and the basque pelota and fronton courts. These stands will have more than 8500 fixed seats.

All facilities will have restrooms, changing rooms, modern seats and comfortable and safe access to the fields or courts for athletes, always complying with rules and procedures for circulation and accessibility of people with impairments.

This sports center will have an administration building, with porcelain tiles flooring, for all permanent federations, a video and surveillance control center and parking areas.

Works Completion Dates

The construction of the rugby, hockey, softball and baseball fields, and the basque pelota and fronton courts is scheduled to be completed by February 7, while the Aquatic Center and outdoor areas is expected to be ready by March 13.

Additionally, the light towers are already installed in the whole Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center  to allow high performance sport to be practiced at night.

The consortium, consisting of Sacyr Construcción SA Sucursal Perú and Compañía Sudamericana de Empresas Eléctricas, Mecánicas y de Obras Públicas SA (SACEEM), has been executing construction works since March 2018.
