As part of “Callao es Lima 2019” (Callao is Lima 2019) campaign, members of the Peruvian rugby team made a demonstration of this sport at the José Olaya Balandra educational institution of Callao.
Ronaldo Guzmán, member of the rugby Sevens team called “Los Tumis”, said that “it is always fun and satisfying to make a demonstration of our sport and I am very happy to see that students have participated and interacted with us.”
The “Callao es Lima 2019” campaign, managed by the Callao Region, allows school students in this district to learn about new sports such as rugby, handball, boxing and wrestling.
“Students were very interested, very attentive and participatory. This makes us happy because we want more people to learn about rugby,” said Luis Barrio de Mendoza, member of the national team.
It is important to remember that Lima 2019 Organizing Committee delivered the rugby Sevens stadium and its warm-up field to the [rugby] federation for Peruvian rugby teams.
“It is really important to have a place to train and it helps not only emotionally, encouraging us, but also in sports and we can aspire to great goals,” said Guzmán.
“The Pan American Games is an open door for us and we are giving our best to go to the most distant places to continue promoting the sport,” said Barrio de Mendoza.
Rugby Sevens will be played in men’s and women’s categories from July 26 to July 28 at Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center.
