The XXVII Pan American Congress of Sports Medicine was successfully held and closed tonight in the auditorium of the Peruvian Medical Association, where 600 health professionals, who will participate in the Pan American and Parapan American Games, were trained during two intense days.
The Lima 2019 Operations Manager, Alberto Valenzuela; the President of the Panam Sports Medical Commission, Bernardo Chernilo; the Secretary General of the Peruvian Olympic Committee, Carlos Manuel Lazarte; and the Dean of the Peruvian Medical Association, Liliana Cabani, attended the closing ceremony.
The Lima 2019 Operations Manager, highlighted the importance of this congress, which was held in Peru for the first time. “We had two days of hard work and valuable training.
This congress represents the beginning of the Lima 2019 Games because training is highly important, so ‘Let’s All Play’.”
“This story started several months ago and now we can finally hold this meeting. Neven Ilic, Panam Sports president, and Bernardo Chernilo, told us that holding this congress would be a milestone because we are already in Games time. On behalf of Carlos Neuhaus, Lima 2019 executive director, we’d like to thank all the speakers from more than 10 countries and the members of the Panam Sports Medical Commission for their presentations and dedication," said Valenzuela.
The II Training Course for Anti-Doping Officers was held at the same time. Valenzuela pointed out that “it has represented a milestone because we have accompanied the training of anti-doping officers. The Games should leave a legacy and you (health professionals) will be part of it because you’ll be better trained.”
Peru hosted the Pan American Congress of Sports Medicine for the first time, where international and national speakers attended. This strengthened the Peruvian medical team, who will participate in the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games.
This important congress was organized by Lima 2019 through its Operations Management Office and Medical Services Department. Speakers addressed prevention and injuries during sports competition, immobilization and transportation of injured athletes, adequate hydration of athletes, use and abuse of nutritional supplements, doping, clinical complexity of Parapan American athletes, among other pathologies.
This Congress aimed to make Peruvian medical society aware of the importance of the development of sports medicine in our country, as well as to promote the exchange of medical and scientific knowledge among experts in sports medicine in the Americas.
The II Accreditation of Doping Control Officers was held at the same time, by which Peruvian officers were ready for the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games. These officers should ensure the adequate collection of samples for anti-doping control and analysis in athletes. Sixty Peruvian officers, trained by the National Anti-doping Commission of Peru (CONAD), participated in the accreditation course. They were evaluated by experts from the Panam Sports Medical Commission in real situations in control tests to national athletes.
