Villa María del Triunfo will be in Lima 2019 Games mode on June 1 and 2, as the best female rugby players in the continent take part in the test event at the Sports Center in Lima Sur. Ten women’s rugby teams will compete in the South American pre-Olympic tournament. The champion will qualify for Tokyo 2020, while two teams will earn quota places for the repechage tournament.
The matches are played in two halves of seven minutes, with a two-minute break. If scores are level at full time, a sudden-death extra time will be played in 5-minute periods. Each team, except those resting in the first round of matches, will play at least three matches per day.
Peru will kick off the competition against Paraguay this Saturday at 10:00 in Group A, which also features Venezuela, Guatemala and Brazil, the biggest favorite in this tournament. The “Yaras” arrived in Lima with their top try scorer Bianca Silva and captain Raquel Kochhann, star of the fifteen-time South American champions.
Chile, Uruguay, Argentina, Costa Rica, and Colombia will play in Group B after qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. However, the Argentinian team hope they will get revenge in Lima, so they arrived with their top try scorer and their captain, Sofía González and Valeria “Pantera” Montero.
“In this tournament, we’ll try to qualify for Tokyo 2020. At least through a repechage,” said Peruvian player Caroline Vergara. Brazilian captain Raquel Kochhann stated: “The pace has been very intense since last year; we’ve had one challenge after another, but we’re ready.”
RUGBY AT LIMA 2019
The Rugby tournament at the Pan American Games will be held on July 26, 27 and 28. Two groups of four teams each will participate in men’s and women’s rugby. Then, they will compete in the quarterfinals, based on the team ranking in the first stage, to define the four semifinalists. On the last day, the best two teams will compete for the gold medal.
Among the potential opponents of the Peruvian women’s team are Brazil, Argentina, Canada, United States, Mexico, and Trinidad and Tobago. A quota place will be granted to a South American team at the pre-Olympic tournament to be held in Lima this week.
Meanwhile, the Peruvian men’s team, known as “Los Tumis”, will try to qualify at the pre-Olympic tournament to take place in Chile in June. The “Sevens” that have been confirmed for Lima 2019 are Canada (two-time Pan American champion), Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, United States, Jamaica, and Guyana.
