The Pan American and Parapan American Torch Relay is one of the most exciting and important events at the Lima 2019 Games, and the call process for the people who will carry both torches starts today.
Anyone can be a Pan American and Parapan American torchbearer. You can nominate people who have excelled in sport or in their life’s trajectory, becoming a role model to be followed; for example, someone who has positively impacted other people’s lives or their community.
In this sense, those people who are examples of the main values of the Olympic and Paralympic movement may be nominated. Among the values are friendship, respect, excellence, determination, inspiration, courage and equality.
The nomination of bearers will be made through the website antorcha.lima2019.pe, where applicants must complete a form indicating who they want to nominate and why they consider that person a “Peruvian who inspires.” The torchbearers will have that designation.
Through this process, 900 torchbearers will be selected for the Pan American Torch Route and 300 for the Parapan American route, totaling 1200 people, whose names will be announced by the end of May.
The lighting of the Pan American Torch will take place on July 2 at the Temple of the Sun in Teotihuacán, Mexico, where it will begin its way to Macchu Picchu, in Peru, on a journey through two ancient civilizations in the Americas.
The Pan American Torch Route will start in Macchu Picchu, Cuzco, on July 4. This route will last 22 days traveling through the Peruvian Highlands, Jungle and Coast, in order to inspire and motivate millions of people “door to door”, until the Opening Ceremony of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games that will be held on July 26, 2019, at the National Stadium.
Along the route, events and ceremonies are being organized in several cities in the departments of Amazonas, Ancash, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Huancavelica, Huancayo, Huánuco, Ica, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Loreto, Moquegua, Pasco, Piura, Puno, San Martín, Tacna, and Tumbes. These events will involve citizens and will make them participate in this celebration, typical of the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games.
The lighting of the Parapan American Torch will be on August 20 at the Temple of Pachacamac, in Peru. The torch will travel through 12 emblematic huacas until the Opening Ceremony of the Parapan American Games to take place on August 23, at the National Stadium.
Along the way, the Pan American and Parapan American torchbearers will carry a message of fellowship and integration across Peru. They will be responsible for “inspiring” the Games host country.
